I've built a new computer for a friend of mine to use in is chiropractic office and this build is giving me fits.

First off a I'm using a new Asus H87-Plus motherboard with 8 gigs of ram. I had no problem putting it all together and installing Windows7. The drivers went in easy as did the BIOS update. After that is where the problems came in.

I get the message "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified file location exists and is writable." I got this message when trying to install the latest AVG anti virus and an older copy of MS office.

I have 3 other Win7 computers at home all running this same version of AVG and I was able to install and uninstall this copy of MS 0ffice on one of my computers to verify that the problem wasn't the age of the software.

The little info I turned up in the MS knowledge base was useless. I really need to deliver this computer and this is the last problem holding me up. Help!!!

Are you installing as an Administrator user? Do you have proper write access to the user's %temp% file?

I've been able to install some other programs. It's a fresh install and I've only put one user account on it. I have tried right-click run as administrator on the set up with the same results. Is there another way to gain admin rights to install programs?

I was able to get Open Office on no problem and Acrobat reader. Other than updates I haven't tried other programs. I'm going to pick up the medial software pack in a few days and try to install it here so if there's a problem I'm not standing around pulling out my remaining hair dealing while trying to deal with the issue.

Where does the %temp% environment variable actually point to?

Open Windows Explorer and type %temp% into the address bar; hit Enter and it should show you the actual destination.

I did that and it points to %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp and while I was there I deleted all the temp files that weren't in use. I also found that the environmental variables is now set in the user profile. Anyway all that looks good.

It took me awhile to find that the folder view options to show hidden folders is now on the control panel rather than at the top of the open window. It's like MS really wants to make it hard for us to upgrade to a new OS...

Anyway I ran office set up again and had the same problem but now there were temp files from the install attempted install including 2 log files with no useful info in them.

One new feature I found was right click and check compatibility and sure enough it passed as compatible.

I'm really stumped. The 2 differences between this and my 3 Win7 computers is the one has a quad core socket 1150 CPU and a 1TB HDD with 64 megs of cache. Back in the old days when HDD's with big cache started showing up, the versions of Windows then needed a patch to fix certain issues but I don't see anything in the knowledge base (or at least the public version I can get to) about this being a problem.

This machine is confirming no good deed goes unpunished. I really want to get it wrapped up and delivered to my friend...

I went back and pounded on the problem for awhile. I found a tech article for MS Office that included some hacks for the INI file. I did them with no luck so I commented them out as well as the other logging options one at a time until the program ran and I was able to get it installed.

Thinking I was really doing great, I went back and tried to install AVG free again with no such luck. If I don't solve the logging problem for it in the next couple 3 days, I'm going to give up and let it go with the MS AV program...

Yes that's the one. I'm not sure why it won't install but free software doesn't come with tech support. I'm going to install the last of the software pretty soon and hopefully I won't have this problem again...
