I have Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2. 1.5 gb RAM, 2.2 ghz Pentium 4, 250 gigs hard drive.

If I install windows update 913466 I can no longer login to websites such as yahoo.com, (insertbanknamehere).com, etc. This also includes windowsupdate.com! I seem to have the same kind of problem with every tenth windows update I install (a huge approximation, but you get the idea). And I therefore just uninstall that particular update.

Similarly, while running ZoneAlarm Free, I cannot access windowsupdate.com or any other websites where I need to login (same as above).

I have tried adding windowsupdate, microsoft.com etc to my trusted sites and it doesn't help (both within Zone Alarm and within my IE security settings).

I've also asked for help on the microsoft.com newsgroups as well as the official zonealarm tech support forums with no luck. I tried what they suggested and it didn't help.

For ZoneAlarm they recommended deleting backup.rdb and iamdb.rdb in the windows/internet logs directory, as well as making sure a few services were automatic and started (auto. updates, background intelligent transfer service, and security center)).

Microsoft.com tech support recommended following directions in this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444

Which I did, to no avail. However, I did not go so far as to create a new user profile, because that seems extreme for my problem. But maybe that's my last resort if you agree with them. Thanks!

The problem with ZoneAlarm and Windows Update is a known issue and affects a lot of people, myself included.

ZoneAlarm say they will try to fix this in a future update, but for now you can either close ZA before you visit Windows Update, or turn off Cookie Control, Ad Blocking, and Mobile Code Control in Privacy.

I tried turning off those 3 options, but I still can't access Windows Update. Of course, if I close ZA I can access windows update.. but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a firewall. Very frustrating.

Not much you can do, either disable it while on the site, or wait for them to hopefully release an fix soon.

Disabling isn't a big deal, Micro$$oft Windows Update is safe, just make sure you start ZA after you've finished.
