Problems, .NET framework

Well I installed .Net Framework redistributable package. The package allows me to run programs made by .NET, Like my ATI Catalyst package 5.3 which comes with a Driver for my Video card.

I was fooling around with a Logon Program found at wincustomize.com, I thought it would be cool to have a unique logon screen. Right after that .NET framework stopped working, and I started getting errors for it, along with my ATI catalyst suite. Along with these problems came an EXTREMLY slow startup process whenever i restarted my computer. And startup programs took forever to load on top of that, and it seemed like my computer was running as fast as a snail, Until 10 or 15 minutes went by.

I uninstalled ATI Catalyst 5.3, and then .Net Framework, and all my problems went away. However when i try to install .NET framework again I get an error outlined as follows.

Error 1935.An error occured during the installation of assembly 'System.ServiceProcess, Version="1.0.5000.0", PublicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11 d50a3a", Culture="neutral", File Version="1.1.4322573""Please refer to help and support for more information HRE5UCT:Ox80070017

IF I install Catalyst 5.3 without .NET the driver works, but the Suite doesnt and i get an error CLI.exe The application failed to Initialize property (Oxx0000135) Please click okay to terminate.

Id like to know if you could help me fix it so .NET installs again, or maybe reffer me to someplace where they can make sense of the error im getting because i have no clue where to reffer to "Help and support"

Also when i type msconfig in RUN I get the following error.

Windows cannot find "msconfig". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Dont know right now, I would like to fix the .net problem first. My concern is not finding msconfig can be a virus. I would advise a complete system scan with an online scanner. See out tutorials in the malware forum.

Its not a virus. I did the two online scans in the Malware section of the forum, Bitdefender and Panda scan found absolutley nothing. I have Windows Service pack 2 full updated, I have two firewalls running, Windows Firewall and Zonealarm pro. I also did a scan with my own antivirus program AVG, and i dont have any spyware.

Config System is still missing. I think that the Windows Logon program I downloaded deleted it, or It has something to do with .NET framework messing up. I was unable to get .NET framework 2 because i was busy but im getting it right now. Ill keep you posted :)

And if you're worried about msconfig, the exact path in XP SP2 is "C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe".

Thanks i was looking for where i could find msconfig. Search wasnt finding it all. However when i try to open the helpctr folder, my system dramatically slows down, and 2 minutes later a window pops up telling me..

    Disk is not formatted:

The disk in drive C: is not formatted.

Do you want to format it now?

What does this mean? And should i Click Yes? Is this normal or is their a problem? helpctr folder wont open it just brings up that window.

    Don't click yes. :)

It appears that you hard drive needs a thorough disk check. Good idea to back up important data before running hard drive maintenance.

I would try a CHKDSK, but also try a drive utility from the manufacturer as Gecks suggested. (If you click Yes and format, you will wipe all the data from your drive and have to install everything again)

Okay I ran CHKDSK on windows Restart, and it found errors on my disk, and then after an hour it finished whatever it was doing. I can now access..

    "C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\

But there is no Msconfig.exe there. On top of that I tried to install .NETframework 2.0 and i got the following message..

    Error 25015.Failed to install assembly
'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\V.2.0.50727\Microsoft.VisualBasic.Vsa/dll' because of a system error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Well this is a new computer, so does that mean i should return my drive?

    Try System File Checker.

Start, run and type in sfc /scannow then OK. (There is a space after sfc) You need a Windows CD for this.

You could also try a repair, but you will have to reinstall any Service Packs.

If you want to know whether or not to return the drive, use a utility from your drives' manufacturer. (We have some available here in the downloads section)

Before you return the drive, they normally ask you to run a utility first anyway.

Having said that, I think the problem is more than likely Windows rather than your drive. (and more than likely caused by malware as Major Attitude suspected earlier)

Well i scanned the drive with a utility from my manufacturer, it said my drive is failing and has errors. Is there any way to repair this or should i just return it and get a new one?

Well I ran CHKDSK 2 more times, and now msconfig is back where its suppose to be and it works, and .NET framework installs properly, so everything is back to normal, so now im unsure if i should get a new hard drive or not. The windows file protection didnt seem to do anything..

    So everything is working now?

If you are concerned about your drive, then download a manufacturer's utility and check it as suggested earlier.

I did, it said my drive is failing after i tested it. BUT after i ran chkdsk a few more times everything works again, just i was missing some shortcuts that i had to replace. Apparantly chkdsk doesnt solve anything it just moves data from the bad sectors to new sectors, so my computer will work again, but there is no guaruntee that the new sectors wont go corrupt or have errors also. So i think i may need a new hard drive, thanks guys, Insomniac, MajorAttitude, and Gecks, for all the help you gave me, i really appreciate it. :)
