Problems reinstalling Windows XP

Tried reinstalling Windows XP. It formats the partition and copies the files and when it reboots the system it doesnt start the Windows Installer wizard but goes back to option to format partition. I have used the disc before no problems. Anybody got any ideas?

 

Could be a faulty hard drive (all hard drives fail eventually, that's why keeping backups of user data is essential).

Test the drive with the drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS which runs from a bootable CD. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

The download for the DOS version is an ISO file from which you can create a bootable CD using IMGBurn from here: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Boot your PC from that CD and test the hard drive using the "Long" or "Extended" test option if available. (The "short" test option is not as thorough and therefore may report the drive is okay when it isn't).

 

Change your boot order to allow your hard drive to boot first after the initial setup.

 

I agree that it sounds like a hard drive problem. The only thing I'd add is that, once you boot from the manufacturer's diagnostic CD, you should note the drive model and serial number - the diagnostic software will display that for you. If the drive turns out to be bad, you can look up the serial number on the manufacturer's support site and if it's under warranty you can get an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) and have it replaced for free.
