    hello

i recently was watching a slideshow of photos on my dell laptop when my computer froze
i had never had a problem with it freezing before but i figured it might be due to overheating so i hit the restart button and this appeared:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new Hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need

If this problem continues, Disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Diable Bios Memory option such as caching diable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Techincal Information:
    ***Stop: 0x000000ED(0x82334E30, 0xC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Assuming it's XP, see if THIS helps.

    yes it is XP

i followed the link and i also contacted dell for support
dell had me run basic hardware tests and they concluded that the problem was software/OS related. (my hard drive and memory worked as they should)
the good news is, as i was told, i will not have to resort to reformatting my computer and losing my harddrive

however, my dell warranty does not cover software related problems and would like to charge me 99$ to fix the BSOD problem

according to the link you sent me from microsoft...
it looks like i will be in need of a WINDOWS XP SETUP CD to get to the recovery
however, i can not find that CD anywhere and YES my OS system is legit
is there anyway i can buy a new XP SETUP CD or can i borrow a friends?

    thanks

You may be able to use your Recovery CD if you have one, and it has that capability?

Failing that, see if your Recovery CD has a repair feature, or as a last resort, reinstall.

You don't have an XP CD though.

I don't know if you can use someone's CD or not, I've never tried it.

Generally, you need the same CD as what is installed.

Your Recovery CD may be able to do the same thing. You will have to read the help file or manual.

ANY Window XP retail CD wil work for stuff like CHKDSK or fixboot; it is a built in feature of the disk, so you should be able to borrow a friend's just fine, should be version independent, as long as it's XP, it will (probably) work.

Also, FYI, I have always found that "Dell Operating System CDs" pretty close to retail XP CDS, so if you have one, you can probably use it to go to the recovery console. But always be carefull of OEM CDs, since they sometimes have a mind of there own. :)

If you are desperate, you can also try the MS boot floppies: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=windows%20xp%20boot%20floppy&DisplayLang=en to boot into recovery console for the chkdsk; when you are asked about the location of "autochk.exe" (after typing in "chkdsk /r"), you can point the checker at c:\windows\system32 (which may or may not work, depending on what shape the file system is in, but is worth a shot); haven't tried the fixboot command with them, but it would probably work fine. I would be willing to bet the MJ featured software like the "windows XP ultimate boot disk" or something from www.bootdisk.com would work even better, but I have nevery actually used any of those disks in this situation, so I will leave that to smarter people than me to confirm. :)

BTW, the bad news here, (just incase you needed more of it)- even if the physical status of the hard drive itself is indeed golden, it is possible that the file system has caved deep enough to already have caused severe data loss, or even to be totally unusable short of a format. Not saying this is what's happening- chances are, one chkdsk /r and you are back to a fully functional desktop- but just FYI, if it's ABSOLUTELY vital data, you may want to follow data backup options before trying to fix it.

the recovery CD option was a 100% success
no more BSOD (knock on wood) UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
i just got to the recovery console thru the OS cd and ran "chkdsk /r" and all was well

ran "fixboot c:" just in case

thanks again for all who helped
