Problems using Windows Update

I have Windows XP Pro SP2. I was disabling some services that i dont need and when i visited windows update i couldnt update windows. When i go to windows update i see all the downloads i need but it just dont wanna d/l. I had to enable automatic updates, BITS and event log but i cant get the BITS to start. Does anyone know how to get this service started? Any help would be appreciated.

 

HERE is a list of what service does what.

 

Download, Unzip, Double-click the reg file and say Yes.

This should rebuild your BITS.

 

I d/l the reg file and install it but it didnt work. I get an error saying - Windows could not start the background intelligent transfer service on local computer. For more information, review the system event log. If this is a non-microsoft service. contact the service vendor, and refer to service - specific error code - 2147024894. I check the event log and all it says it cant start BITS. Can anyone help me with this problems?

 

You obviously didn't bother reading the link I posted.

That tells you exactly what service is needed for Windows Update to work.

 

I did go to black viper's site and i put everything back to default and i still cannot d/l from windows update.

 

Start/Run then the following --

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

reboot

 

thanks for the info. i have a problem with oleaut32.dll - it gives me an error DllRegisterServer in oleaut32.dll failed. Return code was : 0x8002801c. But i did the rest.

 

Thanks Shadow. I guess I didnt need that file. Once I restarted my comp, BITS started and now I can use windows update.

 

Hey Shadow. Currently my microsoft antispyware is not working properly after I did those run commands. Do you know why i cant use antispyware? It was working fine until i rebooted the comp.

 

Can't use as in won't load or won't scan? A simple uninstall and reinstall may fix it.

 

It will load but i cannot update or scan. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it but the problem still occurs.

 

I'm not sure what the problem is; one of the others might have some insight.

I think I found out the problem. I was looking at the error logs in MS Antispyware and it said COMDLG32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. I tried to register it with this command: regsvr32 \windows\system32\COMDLG32.ocx but it says failed error code 0x8002801c. I also try d/l a new file and put it in the system32 folder but no luck. Can anybody help me out?

I had a problem downloading some stuff from the windwoes site and they suggested I set my clock. So I synced the clock w/ atomic, rebooted and was able to download the files I wanted. And there are several KB articles re. problems with Win Update that may be helpful.
