I was just given a used dell E172FPb 17" flat panel monitor today and I can't seem to get it to work. When I turn it on I get the picture for about a second and then it goes black. This happens with the self test mode when the monitor is not pluged into the PC aswell. The power light stays on through the entrie process. Dell customer support is obviously no help to me at all. Any ideas?

do you get a 'no video signal'?

try this.. turn monitor off and reboot comp. Make sure it is off for at least 15-20 secs.

Also dell supply drivers for their monitors. They are optional, monitor should and usually do work without, but if having problems yoy might as well load it. On newer comps you should be supplied with the monitor cd. If not you can download from the dell support site.

once you power on the screen its basically what ever is on the comp, but it only lasts a second then it goes black, i relised its not black either, its just reallllyyyy dark.

I put a torch up to it and went through the factory reset etc. nothing..

I have the same problem also, muppy, if it's not connected to the computer, and it still happens, I can't see that a driver would help. Any other suggestions?

ok guys if its realy dark than you have light problems behind the pannel its self,i bought a proview 17' off ebay for 60.00 and it worked great for three months and started doing the same thing you guys are talking about, but i dont think i can see if mine is working or not, i dont have a torch...lol.....but i was told that their are usaly 2 lite pannels behind the screen and that thats what could be wrong with mine, and then i was told by some one else that their is a resistor that has the tendoncy to go bad on the little chip where your buttons are on all lcds,i havent tore mine apart to find out witch it might be but im going to. but yes mine did the same thing u turn it on and a couple seconds later poooof the screen goes black, ive tried every thing else, unpluging it to turning it off and on and even powerdraining it.and nothing seems to work,i have another lcd from hp thats 17' and it almost dose the same thing, exept the screen like comes on and off nonstop for about an hr befor it finaly stays on.:confused i dont know what to think about the hp but i would check your lights first expecialy if you say you can see it with a torch than lights would be my first look, but take it apart and see.and you should beable to replace them pritty easy i hope this helps you guys good luck.:major
