Problems With Sound When Copying Files To Desktop

    Hi,
ive just finished building my own pc for the 1st time..
i have a ASUS P5WD2-E Premium motherboard, a intel pentium 965 extreme cpu, a nvidia 8600gt graphics card and a 570 psu and im running xp pro x64.
the problem is i backed up alot of my files on to dvd.
when i copy them from the dvd back onto my desktop and try to do anything else i get this crackly popping sound. and if i touch the volume control it gets really bad!!
i cant think of what it could be except maybe the built in sound card thats on the motherboard.
today i tried out a sound card hoping it would take all the crackles and popping away. but it hasnt its still the same even though im not using the built in soundcard any more so it must be somthing else. :(
do anyone know what this could be.

my take first off the bat, is the speaker volume control itself may have taken a knock or is set to quite a low volume and the p.c volume is set quite high.

If this is the case when moving the volume on the speaker itself then one may get a crackle or two, also if the unit has been relocated check for potential electrical wiring in the walls or if there is a the mains power board for the establishement / house nearby

It may also be the incorrect device driver or codec is installed / used for by your sound card, also depending on the quality that the dvd was burned at good indicator is if you have lowered the quality the size of the file will be considerably smaller, in this instance copying back will also loose some quality..nothings purrfect. But i'd look at the speaker volume control dial first. Try another set of speakers or running it through the stereo if you have the right cable available.

    G luck with this one:wave

Ive installed the latest drivers for realtek but it didnt change! i was watching youtube earlier and it started to slow down as soon as i copied some of my backed up files from dvd over onto my desktop. it was like when u touch a record when its playing and slow it right down and everything then started distorting.. crackling.. popping.. it just crashed firefox so i couldnt watch it after 10 seconds.

    Hi ya

It maybe the DirectX files need updating, or have an issue.

Try the following open the run menu and type in dxdiag this may take a tick but have a lok through the various tabs and see if anything has an issue.

Also via you control panel access you internet options have a look at active X components see if there is a damaged component or if they can be updated.

    Also check your virtual memory.

Dont run simultaneous antivirus software and turn off automatic updates also when you note the issue re-occuring have a look in the task manager and just see what is chewing up memory or cpu resources.

May also need to update drivers for the hardware do this via the device manager click on each and use the update driver option, you will need the internet functioning to recieve the updates.

You may also have some dodgey ram that just cant handle whatevers going on once a certain area of it is used "addressed" but something like memtest86 might enlighten you if this is the case.

Also if streaming from online this can be an issue cause or bottle neck, depending what else is running and system config. I had a similar issue with playback of an audio file - turned out it would run for about the same length of time then the audio would fade and that was it was still playng but nothing happening.

Thought it was hardware at first because if something starts its gotta be fine right...well apparently not this issue was fixed by updating the codecs for the app which are sort of like a helper plugin which help the player playback or decode the file. Many players use several codecs and support multiple file formats these can be used by several different players eg... one common format that multiple players can use is an mp3. I would update your browser as well just to be sure.

Other than that i'm sorry nothing further to add, but this will give you something to chew over at the weekend.

    g luck with this one:wave

    Hi

Just an additional note for a good playback is a program called xvid its free, i havent run anything through this that it couldn't handle.

It also has the option to stream to multiple P.C's if thats of any intrest to you.

necro ive checked everything bar trying memtest86, im going to leave my pc on over night so it can test everything. i think its something to do with the ram i have in here so earlier i bought some new sticks from crutial.com. they scanned my pc and told me which ones i needed so theres no mix up. i think it might all be related me not being able to install vista x64 and whats happening with this now. fingers crossed its the problem :)

    Hi again,

Also be aware that hard drives can get dodgey areas - sectors tracks etc especially after three to five years of age depending if the unit has been left on, it may be that the hard drive is trying to read / write to a dodgey sector and reports a non descript error or something vague like windows 98 occassionaly has an awesome error definition "there was an error".

Yes a corrupt or partial install (i have even encountered issues with Msoft auto updates) may cause a number of various issues. Was your Hdrive formatted / converted to the correct file system structure to accept Vista X64??;)

Hope ya get this one sorted, and if not its not a totally useless exercise as you'll certainly learn alot along the way that may help out in the future. Still think choppy sound typically comes from drivers or codec's..or audio buffer issues even..:wave

Hi, I had the new ram delivered yesterday and i installed it but it was little if any better. its just like when u have the latency wrong in Cubase. like echos and everything slowed delayed. so i looked in the bios and i adjusted the latency to the lowest setting which made it perfect then about an hour later it started happening again :cry its weird because it was perfect i could do like a thousand things at once like u should be able to do. earlier last night it cleared a little again. i could touch the volume and it didnt crackle (while i was copying files from dvd to desktop) but when i tried to listen to music on the media player it was really bad. i really think its something to do with the latency because Cubase is exactly the same when i have it wrong!! before i installed Vista i formatted my harddrive over night. it took 8 hours to format. i did it so i would have a clean install. no errors. its the way i installed the same Vista x64 on my old pc and it installed perfectly then.

I finally found out the problem.
I typed in dxdiag and it says no problems, then i went to sound and it says DirectX Features. Hardware Sound Acceleration Level. with Basic acceleration next to it. the slider was on full acceleration so i just tried it on basic and its gone. no horrible sounds :-D thanks for all ur help!! i really needed it :-o
