This may not be the correct forum, but here goes! I have an Advent 7201 laptop and had it within the last 12 months. It will start up fine but then it will not run any programs or anythin. I have tried seeing whats going on with task manager but it tells me that i do not have the right security status or something. I have restarted in safe mode and have run AVG 7.0 and windows defender and they have found nothing but the security centre is turned off and it will not let me start it up. Does anyone have any ides??

oh, and in safe mode i managed to get stuff to work, so i created a file in word, saved it to the desktop, closed it, tried to re-open it, but it said that file location was invalid.........

This should be moved to the software forum. Maybe a moderator/admin will see this and move it.... or maybe you could PM one of the system admins (Major Attitude, Tim W, Adrynalyne, Lev, or one of the others) and see if they can move it for you. You'll get much more exposure and much more accurate help from the software forum.

This doesn't have anything to do with your problem (I don't think) but AVG 7.0 is totally outdated and is no longer supported by Grisoft. v7.5 will no longer be supported after Dec 31 2008... the newest release is AVG Free 8.0 and is available here at Major Geeks:

To your problem: have you tried booting up using the 'Last known good configuration' ? You can find this boot option by pressing F8 right after the PC is powered on. You should see a menu with 'Safe mode' and some other choices; select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and start it up. Have you tried a system restore to a date before you noticed this problem? Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and follow the on-screen prompts...
Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Thanks for the info, i did try a system retore but to no avail. I tried your suggestion, but instead went to repair computer, (after removiong all the files off it and backing the whole thing up) and did a complete destructive restore to restore and reload everything. Seems to have worked, i have put all the software back on it (incuding AVG 8.0 free ed) and it all seems good. Many thanks, you guys are geniuses!!
