problems with cd ripping

Hi, this is my first posting so please be patient with me. I am using a program called creative media source to rip cd audio to my mp3 player. In the past I have had no trouble but lately I am having trouble with burned cd's. Some will transfer ok, others will just freeze the program. If I shut down my pc and try again that same cd will transfer so I don't think it's the actual cd at fault. I am running xp home edition and another fault seems to be that when I get a problem the CDRW icon vanishes from the My Computer panel, again, once restarted the icon returns. My burning unit is a Lite-On SOHR 4839 V which came pre-installed on the pc. The pc is less than 2 months old.
I have run all the usual spyware and virus checks, including Spybot, adaware, AOL spyware check and hijack this.
Any help please will be appreciated.

 

what software are you using to burn the discs?
have you updated your drives firmware?

I'm using Nero to burn instead of the sonic record now which came bundled with XP as I've always used Nero with no problem and have been happy with it.

I checked the Lite-On site for upgrades but my particular burner the Lite-On SOHR 4839 V isn't listed.

 

are you sure that your drive is a SOHR 4839V? I searched google and it came up with two links. none of which seem related to CD RW drives. just check your model number again...
