Problems with certain websites unless accessed through proxy.

Having a strange problem with my internet. On all the systems on my network, including my iPod Touch, certain websites won't load at all while others take forever and on others images don't load. However, when I visit these websites through a proxy they work fine and load immediately. These are my attempted solutions:

    • Changing the default DNS to OpenDNS.
    • Disabling the firewall.
    • Using CCleaner to clean all the browsers.
    • Scanning for malware.
Are there any other solutions I could try?
    Thanks.

Tell us a little more about your situation.

Are you trying to get past controls established by a school or an employer or perhaps a parent?

It's a home network and there are no parental controls active as there are no children in the home.

Check your browser settings to make sure it isn't set to use a proxy.

Also check you hosts file. It may be blocking access to some sites and may be blocking ads or parts of sites.

You didn't offer any info on OS or browser so I can't tell you how to check these or even where their located.

Are you running SpyBot? Have you checked your hosts file?

All computers in the house are using Windows 7 and this is a problem with all three computers, not just mine.

I have Spybot yes, I tried removing all entries and then adding Spybot's host list but it still didn't solve anything.

Hummm.....perhaps it is something in your router settings? Have you reset it to factory settings?

It's probably the SpyBot hosts list thats causing the problem. It restricts access to sites that are know to transfer malware to unsuspecting visitors. It also blocks some of the ad sites.

The slow down could be caused by the Windows DNS Client. You could try disabling it in services. This just allows the browser to access the hosts file directly instead of reading the DNS cache in Windows. If it doesn't help, restart the service.

In Win7 to temporarily turn off the DNS Client, go to the command prompt as Administrator and type "net stop dnscache" and hit enter.(no quotes) The service will restart when you restart Windows.

ahh.. resetting the router settings did work, didn't think it would considering the only changes were port forwarding for Napoleon Total War. :-o

Thanks to the both of you for taking your time to try and help me.
