My son's Dell has been randomly shutting off for some time now. Most of the time, the "Windows is shutting down" screen appears and the computer turns off. If you unplug the cable from the back and later plug it back in, the power light will go on for a second as if the computer is booting up then shuts down. Several times as you try to start the computer, it will turn on then shut off repetitively for seconds at a time. I have replaced the power supply and the mother board was replaced just over a year ago. If you unplug the computer for a few days, it seems to stay on longer before it shuts down. I have set the power options in the control panel for the power switch and sleep switch to do nothing when pressed. Could this be a faulty power button in the front? The fan is working properly. Could the CPU be getting overheated?

    Thanks!

If you replaced the power supply and you are sure it is putting out enough watts then yes the next thing to check would be a heat issue. Take the side off and watch if all the fans are spinning. You may have one that is marginal.
I think if it was the CPU fan, you would even get a windows is shutting down screen - it would just shut down.
