Problems with fonts....

I recently downloaded a font pack, and all the fonts have .OTF extensions. When I double click on one, I get the error in the screen shot below, basically saying it's not a valid font file. So, what now? Is there a way I can add one of these fonts to Word '03 and try to use it that way?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi dlb

    Which OS you using?

Do you have one you can attach in zip file for me to test?

OTF are Open Type Fonts and should act and open like TTFs in that only one file is needed, unlike Type1 which need the masters to be in Type1 and PFB for same font.

Try opening your Windows font folder and then click File > Install New Font, browse for the location of those fonts and try and install just one of them this way. Will if installed ok show in Offices list of fonts.

I've also attached in the zip below an open type .oft font I have that works for you to try.

Whooops! I should have mentioned the OS, it's XP Pro SP2 with all the updates except IE7. It's on my personal home PC, and I'm at work at this particular moment, but I'll have a look-see when I get home (about 7 hours from now) and we'll see whuddup....
However, I did copy the fonts to my flash drive, so here's a zipped folder with 4 different fonts for you to check out....
    Thanks Halo!

I have no issues with those all load ok! have you tried any of them on one of your work test machines? make sure they are extracted from zip folder, also does the icon for the file look ok as in this

    http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7069/10799389uy6.jpg

as other theory is that its possible they lost association to the Windows Font Viewer, so right click and choose Properties and then by Opens With click Change and browse for the Windows Font Viewer if not listed then browser to system32 and choose Fontview.exe as thats the Windows Font Viewer application ( doesnt run stand alone ) and click OK.

Only difference I using Vista, but that shouldnt make a difference as I used OpenType on XP SP2, not got a XP PC at home to test these on.

In XP they look just like they do in your post, with the 'stylized' letter O except on my PC the O is red and black (I think) and not green... but I might be thinking of the Opera browser 'O'.... anyway, I tried a few fonts at random (the new font pack has probably 150 fonts) and they all worked here on one of my work PCs. So what's the deal? Why would I get the error on my home PC? Could it be that .OTF isn't associated with fonts or something? Now I'm all freaked out that something's up with my PC :cry

Hmmm... I'll have to mess with it when I get home.... about an hour from now....

Well, this is weird... they do not open on my home PC, but other .OTF fonts are fine. When I try to copy any of these new fonts to the Windows\Fonts folder, I get the error you see attached below. But these exact same fonts worked on a different PC also running XP Pro SP2. I tried to re-associate them with the Font Viewer, didn't make difference. Kind of at a loss.....
    :confused

EDIT- OK- it would appear that my PC doesn't correctly recognize .OTF as a valid font type. I thought I had other OTF fonts installed, but I don't. I just have to figure out how to get my OS to realize that OTF is a valid font style....

I've been doing some Googling, and it appears that this is somewhat common with OTF fonts, and more common with TTF fonts (which would be a nightmare 'cuz MANY fonts are TTF). Is it strange that I have a bunch of TTF fonts with the O as the icon in the Fonts folder? During my research, I read that it may have something to do with the naming structure of the OTF fonts (but this also happened with Halo's OTF he uploaded above), so maybe not... if I look in Windows\Fonts it shows the names of the fonts installed, but if I right click a font and choose properties, I get a completely different filename for the font; for example: the font named "Arial (True Type)" is actually named "ARIAL.TTF". I read that maybe the OTF fonts needs a similar naming structure; but I find it strange that Arial (True Type) or ARIAL.TTF as the O icon (see screen shot).... in the Googling I've been doing, I've found plenty of people with this exact same problem, and absolutely NO fixes for it..... HELP!!! I'm not really worried about being able to use this new font pack, it was free, but I don't like having any issues at all on my personal PC, and this (so far) is the first real issue I've had in a really long time. And I hate it! I've searched the registry and was comparing any OTF entries to any TTF entries just to see if the data was more-or-less the same; it was. So, is a repair install of XP in my near future? Would sfc /scannow do anything for me?

ANY help or ideas at this point will be greatly appreciated :cry

(I installed TweakUI 'cuz I heard it had a font repair option; it has a repair option for the font folder if it starts misbehaving and thinking it's a normal folder, which it is not. It has it's own set of rules as seen with it's 'custom' naming structure.)

    Hi dlb

If your font have that icon then they are being seen as correct file type, however something is stopping that file extention from being used, your PC doesnt have more than 3GB ram does it and you've tweaked the boot.ini for a 3GB switch?

Cannot see that security software would affect this but disable what you have and try opening them, also boot to safe mode and try, maybe able to narrow it down this way to a 3rd party application blocking this.

My open type fonts are seen as .ttfs in the fonts folder and that is fine.

SFC /Sannow may hightlight a corrupt system file.

Also I just converted one of those fonts you attached into .ttf and Type1 ( will be a .pfm in the folder as its needed to go with the T1 ) so try them to see if they open ok.

    Thanks Halo....
My home PC has 3gb DDR2 (2 x 1gb; 2 x 512mb; dual channel). I'm running AntiVir, BOClean, BHR4.5, and MBAM for active protection. This is the first I've heard of a 3gb switch for the boot.ini file, can you elaborate on this a bit?
I was actually considering converting the fonts to a different format, but wasn't real clear on exactly how to do it, and a quick Google search located some apps that claim to do it, but they were hosted by less-than-reputeable sites (IMHO) so I stayed away. Besides, converting them doesn't fix the problem, it just circumnavigates it which I don't want to do.... Anyway- again, I'm at work and won't be able to try the converted font you provided above for about 7 hours or so, but I'll give it a go when I get home and post what happens.... in the meantime, if you could provide more info on the 3gb switch for boot.ini, like why it's needed, how to implement it (I know how to edit boot.ini I'd just need to know exactly what to add to the file), and the like, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks for your time and expertise Halo, I do appreciate it! :-D

    Hi dlb

Info on the 3GB boot switch, but if you not using it then, that should not be the issue, just read that some users on Adobes forum had issues with their Font Packs if using this switch, the fonts in question that had same error as your getting where OpenType.

you'd basically paste this at the end of the boot.ini text

As for the conversion, I bought FontLab 4 a few years back and luckily it works fine in Vista.

So my otf font file or others work ok on your PC?

When you mentioned earlier that Windows may need some more naming in the file structure for XP, that could be the problem, so did you try out the font I attached, not the ttf or T1 but the OTF.... if that works then its possible that the font pack you have was for MAC as OpenType are ment to be cross-platform capable, but these "maybe" missing file data... so try the ones I re-converted below, they are the ones you suppled.

One other possible fix could be to delete the file type .otf and then right click Open With one of the fonts and then choose Windows Font Viewer again as the default. ( to delete file type click in any folder Tools > Folder Options > File Types and locate .otf and delete )

I'm having similar problems. The /3GB switch doesn't really make a different. I tried both with it on and off. It's a very odd problem. My current machine has 4GB physical memory. It's basically 2 x 2GB DDR2. I tried removing 1 of the memory 2GB but it didn't do anything. It use to work before I reinstalled my OS (windows xp sp2). I've been googling around for a solution. But no answers yet. Even the Adobe site says it might be the /3GB switch, it says about the same thing as this site. Anyone have any ideas? Deleting the association to the OTF files didn't work either.

I mis-spoke here... I thought I had other OTF fonts installed, but I don't. I saw some fonts in my font folder with the "O" icon and assumed they were OTF. They're not, they are TTF but they're showing the "O" icon, and other TTF fonts are showing the "TT" icon... is this normal?

I've already tried this, and it didn't make any difference.... but I'll try it again.....

EDIT- I just went through the steps again with the exact same results: "The requested file %font filename.otf% is not a valid font file."

    :confused :cry

Sorry about the triple post, but MG won't let me add to my previous posts (I guess I'm waiting too long between edits).... anyway:
Yep... I tried 'em.... same error as before: "The requested file %font filename.otf% is not a valid font file."

    Hi dlb

Now at sadly a loss as to a fix to this without searching, however did a bit more reading of others with similar issues as yours and asked a few contacts, strange one came out in do you have Nvidia or ATi graphics? if Ati update your gfx drivers to latest! ( Omega drivers if running those seems to cause this and a few have downgraded to v7.10 )

Nvidia 9600GT 512mb factory OCed to 720/2000.... the thing is, I don't know if this is a recent issue, or if it's been this way for awhile 'cuz I've never had any OTF fonts until a few days ago... Thanks for all your help Halo. I'll keep looking it this and if I find a fix, I'll be sure to post it; I'm not the only one out there with a PC running perfectly except for this one fairly minor issue. :banghead

    Any ideas about this? ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ I attached a screenshot a few posts up illustrating what I'm talking about.
