Problems with ICS

Hi,

I have my home computer and laptop connected via a crossover cable. I ran the home network setup wizard and enabled internet connection sharing and all was working well.

A few days back, I had my brothers laptop with me so I connected it to the same cable and ran the network setup wizard on it. It detected the shared connection and worked fine.

Now whenever I connect my laptop back, the ICS does not work. The machines can see each other and I can access files and folders but the shared internet connected fails to work. I ran the wizard on both machines again but still no luck. I tried a third machine and ran the wizard and still the same problem. Shared files and folders but no internet.

Any idea why this problem has occured and how I can fix it? Is there any way I can reset the settings on both machines and run the wizard again? Is there any way to manually enter the settings so that I dont have to run the wizard every time?

Do both machines have system restore? You could give that a whirl!

 

Both do have system restore but thats something I dont want to use as I have installed quite a few new programs on both machines, since its been almost a few weeks since I tried accessing the internet from the laptop. I have been using it to only transfer files back and forth and just noticed it now.

What is your Internet Connection???

 

I have a DSL modem hooked up to my desktop via USB.

 

Maybe your ICS is properly setup, but for some reason DNS is not being passed through properly.

If you go to a command prompt on your laptop, what do you see when you type "ping google.com"? "ping 4.2.2.2"?

Have you turned off ALL firewalls? Including the built-in XP one? Sometimes you have to completely uninstall firewall software for your machine to respond properly.

 

I just tried something out. Hooked up a freshly reinstalled system and ran the network setup wizard - it detected the shared internet connection and everything worked fine. It stopped working the moment I installed Norton Antivirus 2005 and i cant get it to work now, even disabling firewalls and worm protection. Any idea why this is?

 

Go to Start, Control Panel, Windows Firewall,
On left panel switch to Classic View,
Main panel open Windows Firewall,
If it says "On" go to the tab Exeptions, and check mark file and printer sharing.

squeaner - the file and printer sharing is checked in the windows firewall settings. since im assembling a couple of systems for friends, I tried the same with two other machines and same problem - all works fine till norton 2005 is installed. while running the network connection wizard I get a message on the new machine saying a shared internet connection has been detected. This message does not work after norton is installed.

 

Question when you say Norton 2005 do you mean Norton Internet Security 2005 or just Norton Antivirus 2005???

 

just norton antivirus not the full security - anyways not an issue now as I have installed a wireless router and am sharing the connection.
