(copyed ans pasted from other thread) Didn't mean to hijack, sry all

since this morning everytime i try to open the web browser i get this in my adress bar "http:///" it seems to keep refreshing itself every few seconds and doesnt allow me to do anything through IE. When i check the internet options it shows this as the current web address "res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm". The problem seems to be related to Internet Explorer because i can surf the web through Ares (file sharing prog) and everything is fine. I have had this problem ever since i started my pc this morning, the pc was off all night and was 100% fine when i shut down the night before.
I've tryed everything i can think of including many things i've read on this site.
ive ran virus scans, spyware scans, updated windows files, and ran CCleaner
    nothing has helped.
Can someone here please please help me out.

also im very sorry for the bad spelling/grammer ;\

I'm using Windows XP, im not sure what version IE is.

i'm having the same exact problem. i think it either started last night or this afternoon. any ideas? i ran hijackthis, and the only new things that showed up was a google toolbar item...i checked windows explorer, and it shows that the file was created yesterday. so i deleted it, but that didn't help. the other new item was for a "winpack.exe". tried deleting it, but it came back.

Ares is a 'File Sharing' program not quite a browser, try using Firefox and see what happens..
Also, it does sound like a spyware infection, or possibly worse and the cause could be the File Sharing program you are using...cause those programs are known to spread malwares. Are you able to change your Home Page in IE settings? Does it stay that way or change back? If it does change...you are infected with some sort of malware, read the stickies in Spyware Specific section of the Forums.

it does sound like spyware, but what i tried didn't solve anything. i booted into safe mode, disable system restore, ran ad-aware, ran spybot, hijackthis (nothing new from last time), and restarted. my problem is still there...norally all that stuff will fix everything.

the page restarts so fast that i had a hard time getting to "internet options", but when i finally was able to open it up, it just has my original default "http://www.google.com" there. if i click "use current", then what loc typed before shows up.

    has anyone seen this before?

    Gentlemen,
If you are deleting something and it keeps coming back, and it is causing problems with IE and associated programs, then my advice would be to move your posts to the Spyware section. It may take a while, as the Spyware section is a very busy page, but I'm sure that you will get some help there! And in case you haven't been welcomed before - Welcome to MajorGeeks! :) Please read and follow all the instructions on the sticky's at the top of the page, before asking for help!

Ok my problem just seemed to go away on its own now, dunno what's the deal with that.
hopefully it wont come back ;\
If it does ill try out firefox and see if its just a pure IE problem or not.

    thx all

it just went away? what did you do in between the time that it wasn't working until it started working again? do you happen to have comcast?

okay well i was able to fix my problem...hopefully it is a permanent solution and not a temporary one. i think it was winpack.exe that was messing up my system...killed it in system processes, deleted c:\windows\system32\winpack.exe, and 3 entries in the registry.
