Problems with my router

Okay well my wireless internet wasn't working properly so i had the amazing idea of pressing the button on the back of my router which restores it back to factory settings lol.

Now the Router is working again but i don't think its set up properly now .. my xbox and other computer with a wireless receiver cannot pick up the network because i don't think the Router is transmitting anything.

Now i have tried to access the router to set it up and change the settings ... it says on the back of the router that you type in a address with numbers into your browser and login to access the router and change settings , now there is guides on how to set everything up but i need to access the router through this address and the problem is that it doesn't work when i type it in . I know for a fact that it worked before i pressed the button because i opened up a few ports so i could play some games a year or so ago. I have tried reinstalling the software which came with the router to no avail. I can't update the firmware either on the router because i must access the routers settings (through the IP address) and i obviously can't do that

    my Router model is ...

    Netgear WGR614v5

i have been recommended to try these addresses... myrouter.net and that didn't work either

If anybody could help me at all it would be amazing cheers

    thanks

    So far i have tried

    www.myrouter.net
    192.168.1.1
    192.168.0.1
    192.168.62.1

    To no avail :(

    Usual defaults for netgear are

    http://192.168.0.1

    user = admin
    password = password

Did you forget the http:// bit?

    Zeb Private E-2

I have already tried this , with and without the http: bit . I just get

Problem Loading Page:The connection was reset
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

OK do this and post either the text or the text file which will be generated on your C drive.

    start>run>typein
    cmd

In the black box which opens typein in at the > prompt

    ipconfig /all >c:\ip.txt

I am attaching a txt file from a properly configured (working) Windows XP installation connecting using a netgear wireless adapter.
The router is Inventel, not netgear but the principal is the same.
    Compare with yours

Your ip settings are basically way out of court are you using cable?

    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 62.252.224.20

    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 194.168.4.100

These are your router's addresses, try them in your browser. They should be the same. You have netbios disabled which means that things which refer to net addresses by name are not synchronised with things which use the four groups of numbers.

How is your windows IP set? Have you got a static IP from your provider for some reason?

    start>connectto>showall
    rightclick the LAN or Wireless>properties
    scrolldown to TCP/IP
    select and click properties

    Normal settings would be

    obtain an Ip automatically
    obtain DNS automatically

If you have anything different, for a good reason post it and we will take it from there.

Thanks for the quick reply.. my settings are as they should be for IP and DNS.

I tried those adresses and seem to be getting the same problem with them not working :(.

Im pretty sure my provider sets an ip or something ... ive heard about that before , im with Virgin atm and i know that ntl the previous company did something like this.

Where should i go from here? thanks for the help ;)

You didn't answer the Windows settings part of the question.

Also go back to the cmd box and typein

    ipconfig /flushdns

    restart the pc.

If you still have the netgear cd, the manual will tell you the alternative in words to type in to access the admin page.

I believe it is something like, I'm doing this one from memory as I don't have one to test.

    http://routerlogin.net

    or

    http://netgear.home

    or

    http://router.home

Okay none of those worked either , still get problem loading page. I did the flushdns thing too .

I don't understand your question regarding windows , can you please reiterate

Not sure what happened to my last post but here is the Windows question again.

How is your windows IP set? Have you got a static IP from your provider for some reason?

    start>connectto>showall
    rightclick the LAN or Wireless>properties
    scrolldown to TCP/IP
    select and click properties

    Normal settings would be

    obtain an Ip automatically
    obtain DNS automatically

Cable settings are often different but yours are outside the normal microsoft range it recognises so what do you mean by

As your setup is at least partly working I am trying to tread softly in working through this a little bit at a time.

    Zeb Private E-2

when i say my settings are normal i mean for

    "obtain an Ip automatically
    obtain DNS automatically"

they are already like this , i think my provider gives me a static ip ... I am with Virgin broadband at the moment

Since you now know what your router is using as DNS and DHCP, you can force your non working pc to use these by changing from 'obtain automatically' to 'use the following' and typing them in.

    Zeb Private E-2

Thanks for that , i will try that soon . Im just gonna do a reset of the router to be definatley sure

  17. Zeb

    Zeb Private E-2

That could be the case , but the underlying problem is the fact that i cannot access the router to configure it for wireless as i have done a factory reset

Just a little update , on the netgear forums i have been advised to do another factory reset. I will post my reply on here too...

I should try the substitute router as the quickest option.

Also an email or phone call to Netgear support, I have always found them helpful.

Okay will do , don't think i can get the router for a few days now :(

I will try and email Netgear support . Will keep you posted ;)

    Final thought

You should still be able to access the router when it is not connected to the cable DSL.

What happens if you try this, including the hard reset. Are you sure you are holding the button right in?
