Hi, I recently installed a MP3 player onto my computer. The first time it didn't work so I uninstalled it and re installed it again. The second time it did work fine. Now when I go to use it, I plug it in and it finds it o.k, But then the system kicks it out and I get told that the USB storage device has malfunctioned. I have tried the mp3 on two other PC's and it works fine so it is a hardware issue on my PC. It must be. I was thinking that maybe I have somehow installed it twice and the two are conflicting, hence the malfunction messages. I've looked through device manager and it says that the drivers are not installed for the device. Again, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it but to no avail. Please help someone as it is driving me nuts. It's probably something simple like deleting devices that have been dublicated or something but I don't know whats meant to be there and what isn't.

    regards steveo

have you tried finding new drivers for the mp3 and the usb/motherboard or even a bios update? sometimes it can be something as simple as that.

I've tried with the new drivers for the mp3. It just says that the drivers that are installed are o.k and no new ones available. I haven't tried the usb/motherboard or bios though. Do you do that the same way, through device manager then?
Thankyou for the quick reply and your help. Its very much appreciated.

if there is usb drivers for your mobo then yes but the bios update is a bit more complicated but if get the bios update (from who ever makes it) it should have full instructions just read it all through before doing anything and double check its the correct one for your board

Forgive me if I sound a bit simple, I know the basics of my computer and I can manage things usually. It's just when things like this happen and you run out of things to try. Anyway back to this BIOS thing. Am I right in thinking that I just go to the manufactures (of my board) website and I can download from there. Or do I do it through, say, microsoft update. I'll try all this later but if none of that works, do you reckon it could be conflicting hardware. It's just strange that it worked fine once and now it doesn't. Obviously I'll try what you have suggested first and then see.

yeah you just download it from the board manufacture and from what you have said it looks like its related to the mp3 player possibly it is the mp3 player but could be the usb or even the board but it could be a bug in the board that may be corrected in a bios update

Yes I've tried it in my other three USB ports and the same thing happens. It basically finds the mp3 but when you go into the selected drive(in my computer) it is just as if nothing in connected as there are no settings or files.
Then the computer kicks out the MP3 with a message stating that the MP3 has malfunctioned. As i said before, I've tried the MP3 in two other PC's just to clarify that it does or doesn't work and both times it DID work. It was found straight away by plug and play and all files and folders on it were accessible, unlike on my PC.file transfer to and from the unit worked fine.
On my device manager, under USB Devices I have a couple of lines that are the same. Obviously I don't want to delete them because I'm not sure if I need them. I think I have two Universal pci bus controllers or something. Two Enchaned usb controllers, Two USB mass storage devices (which is a bit strange because Apart from keyboard, mouse and printer, I don't have anything else connected), about 4 USB root hubs(i think these are the keyboard etc) and then you have the MP3 which comes up as unknown device. Am I supposed to have all these things or maybe just one and not two of certain entries. Is there any way I can just reset all my USB's without obviously losing all my system data etc.

Yes it does have a yellow explanation mark next to it. I did do that though, I uninstalled the device, then reinstalled it but I don't think I rebooted before I reinstalled it. Would that make a difference then? Unfortunately I'm not on my PC at the moment so can't try all this till this evening. When I reinstalled the device XP does find it but then it kicks it back out and comes up with the USB malfunction message.
I've tried it in all my other USB ports and the same thing happens. I've also attached my digital camera to all the ports and that works fine. But as I said I've tried the MP3 on other machines and it had no problems whatsoever. This is why I'm so stumped.

I shall try that later mate. I'm hoping that it was just down to me not rebooting before the install. I'll let you know how I get on. This is why I'm so confused though because I know my USB's work and I know my Mp3 player works, But they just don't seem to work together. thanks for your help and I'll let you know. Kind regards steveo

After a few attempts and a lot of messing around I got the bloody thing working. Just did what you said a few times. It still plays up every now and again though. When you are file transferring, It just suddenly gets booted out the system, and then it finds it again and you carry on,or sometimes you have to unplug it and then back in again. Very annoying but better than what I had before, which was nothing. Have you any ideas as to whats happening? What about this BIOS update or Motherboard update? Would that make a difference to anything? The other thing I have noticed is that since I've been messing about with all my USB bits and bobs, my internet connection seems a bit slower. This is USB and I was just wondering if there was anything I could do with that. Basically, Can you just install new drivers on all your USB devices to speed things up a bit or will that not work. I am a firm believer in 'If it ain't broke, Don't fix it' so am a bit wary to go changing things about if it's not warranted. Do you think there's anything I could try but not too much grief.
Thanks alot for your help, it's ver much appreciated
    Regards steveo

the bios update my not be needed it depends if there is a bug in the setting which are updated by the update if you look it up on the manufactures site it will tell you what bugs etc it correct so if you look it up it may be of use to you it might not be
