My computer is not recognizing the new hardware i installed. I installed a LG super multi DVD burner and removed my cd burner. Im not even sure what info you might need to get me started. When i reboot my computer, a message about my secondary drive not being recognized comes up. Help me please...

Operating system would be a nice start..... did the drive come with software at all? what kind of connection is it?, the exact message you get could be helpful so if you could write it down and let us know what it is it might help.... or it might not....

OS: dell dim 4600 series with Pent 4 2.80Ghz with 2.0 Gb ram and NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200. Using Win XP SP2.

The error message pops up on start up after the initial screen. It makes 3 beep noises then "Primary Drive 1 not found. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility"

I have tried both but rather than screwing something up i have not change much in the setup utility.

Shut down, and remove the mains plug. Pull off and replace the DVD WRITER IDE cable, and power connection to it, as it usually happens when the leads are not making good contact.

You could also check the other IDE leads , a they can be disturbed in changing the DVD Writer

I tried it again with the same results. I unhooked both connections and reconnected into the DVD player and the new DVD burner.

I recieved the same error message on startup...

Have you got all your windows updates ?
Have you got nero, or, other writing software, or, power dvd.?
Did you not recieve writing software withthe new DVD Writer ?
These are often a cause, if not installed ,as Windows needs certain files to work

    I have the windows updates.
I have nero but the drive came with a cd with power dvd and nero express. it also included powerproducer, in cd, acrobat reader and a drive manual. This is the only disk that was with the drive. and neither of my drives are working to be able to open the manual for troubleshooting.

    I hope that helps...

Press <F1> to resume, <F2> to Setup This message is displayed after a recoverable error message Press <F1> to start the boot routine or <F2> to enter the system setup program and change any settings

I suggest that you press f2 on startup, and look in your bios/cmos settings, and look for IDE O MASTER
and look for IDE O SLAVE
and look for IDE 1 MASTER
and look for IDE 1 SLAVE
There should be a settings change ability.
Try auto (detect) on all, and restart.

Thanks, I got it to work. originally had a dvd player and a cd burner in the my tower. I wanted to keep the player and replace the cd burner with a dvd burner. When i reinstalled the cd burner and replaced the dvd player with the dvd burner, every thing worked great. Thanks for your help.
