Problems with updating Vista

I am running Vista on my new Dell computer (less than 6 months old). After I run the system updates, Internet Explorer will not work any longer. The computer is still connected to the internet, as I can get mail, send mail, etc. Internet Explorer just seems to lose the ability to connect to the internet. I have to do a system restore to get back to the point where I have internet connection.

I'd like to run these updates, but can't lose the internet. Any help would be appreciated.

I have also tried to run Firefox on this computer, but can't get it to connect to the internet either - but this is unrelated to the problem I have above.

If I could firefox to work, I could try your solution above....maybe if we can fix the firefox issue, i can try the other!

Mark...I have run through this thread with no luck. I must have the most stubborn virus program because I can turn everything off, including Microsoft security, and it still will not run firefox. I will try again and report the results back here.

    Mark,

I did everything recommended by this thread, but firefox does not work. It will not connect the first time after the initial load, which is what it was doing at first. I have checked the connections to ensure they are the same as IE, deleted the entry in the security window, checked 'notifiy' where it says, and it doesn't even come up and ask me to allow firefox to go through the firewall.

Any other suggestions? thanks so much.

I purchased my dell without the pre-installed package, because I had my own valid version of symantec anti-virus. I don't know, however, where to look in the program to allow programs through to the internet. Any help here would be appreciated.

Here are the results from the Enum Process

    Windows Firewall is on
2 Service(s) from Avira (AntiVir) detected
    1 Service(s) from Norton/Symantec (SYMTDI) detected
antispy process from Microsoft Windows Defender detected
antispy process from Microsoft Windows Defender detected
3 processes from Symantec Corporation detected

I tried to use the Auto-fix tool from Symantec, but it won't run - it tells me my system needs to have a bunch of things (at least IE 5, Windows XP, etc.), but my system is WAY more configured than it requires, so I'm thinking it's blocking itself from running somehow.

I will try to go through the other suggested links tonight. Thanks for sticking with me...!

Well, that was quick! Went through the other three - here's what we have

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls#..._from_Symantec - This is the one with the autofix tool that won't run
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/...ing+Norton+360 - I don't have Norton 360, so there's nothing to fix here.
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...257355004bd26f - I don't have Norton Internet Security that I can find. I only have Symantec Anti-Virus

If you can suggest a better anti-virus/security program, I'll use it. I just have these programs because we can get them for free under a program with my husband's work.

    Thanks again

Out of curiosity, can you ping majorgeeks.com?

Click the windows key + R, type in: cmd (press enter).
    ping majorgeeks.com

    If the results =

then, in your browser, try browsing to: http://74.86.201.220

If this works, then you have a DNS issue.

Ok. I was able to do that and it did everything you said, so you're telling me I have a DNS issue...which means what!?

Is it fixable...do I need an operation? :)

Any all help is appreciated ! Thanks
