problems with windows update

Recently found out that my xp pro is not original, and I can not update it thru m$ becuase it is not genuine.
Can you suggest any way to update it security patches other than going thru m$, or buying new cd?? please help?

 

I just recieved a tip. do you know if its true. there is a program called 'bigfix' which directs you to where you can get the patches, I just found it!!!!

Halo, I was not aware of my xp status. my computer crashed and a friend gave me his cd, so I reformated and and put the key that came with the homemade cd.

 

There is a web site available that will update Windows, the site is http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ and it will not work with IE at all. I use it and never had any problems other then the Feb update from M$ will slow down any highspeed connection be redoing your TCP settings but thanks to software from Major Geeks that has been fixed to. THe updates from this site are the real M$ updates, and it scans your system and will update or give you the option of picking the updates. It's great for anyone that bought a used system (Like I did) and needs to stay updated!

 

thank you for responding DAKz. I tried the site, got the firfox plugin, downloade some updates, restarted the computer, went to the site again and it gave me the same list of updates, I believe the updates never got installed,
any ideas why??

 

Not sure, go to My Computer click on your hard drive and see if there is a folder there Labeled "WU" it may be named something different on yours, I have the same problem when I go there with 4 updates, because I don't use Outlok express I don't update them, no sense making my windows folder any larger. Another site you may wish to try is http://www.softwarepatch.com/index.html But these are grab and go it will not tell you which ones are installed or which ones you need but they have the updates and patches for Office and many other titles. Hope this was a help to you.

 

Yes there is a file called wutemp. and it has in it all the updates

 

DAKz, thank you for the tips, These sights you have listed are great, and they work, even if you do not know anything about computers!!!
In another note, I do not know why none of the staff knows this. Maybe you should start a thread and let everyone know about these links?
After lookin thru all of the forums of the past, It seems like everybody on the staff if avoiding this issue. that maybe becuase the majorgeeks staff is a m$ kiss ass and afraid to help people with validation and update problems.
what do you think? why no one else was as nice as you?

 

We do not utilize third-party websites to help us "validate" our software that Microsoft does not validize, if your software is not legal then I would suggest buying the real software that would allow you to validate your software through Microsoft legally. Most of us here do that, maybe you should too.

 

Well...They really are, I read a lot of great stuff on here, in many different threads. But we all seem to lose sight of one simple thing, Windows is an operating system, nothing else, it is an interface between us and the hardware. it is not an application, and there are places where you can debate it's value as a true operating system(ie Linux users) but when it's all said and done all it is, is a platform to allow us to launch many other applications that allows us to do whatever we do with a computer, and to that end no one should have to get left behind when there are ways to solve simple operating system problems. Some of us that have been messing with computers for a while (Me since 1976 thanks to the military) tend to forget that somewhere along the way someone had to pull us along to be where we are now. To those that post on these places remember your advice is supposed to help, to those that ask, read everything, you never know what little piece you read last week will help you this week, if nothing else pass it on to those that ask! But let me ask you this. How do you know the Validation M$ has created works perfectly without bugs? I guess you know becuause you are m$ kiss ass
Even then do you really think that... all that can not afford to buy a new software or a computer should stay igorant of the world. would you like for only the rich to get a head?

For one, if the validation system Microsoft created was full of bugs, do you think they would have released it? They are not idiots and they know what they are doing. And I am not a MS kiss ass, its just the simple fact that I have legal software and get my updates through them, instead of having bootleg software and gettin updates from unworthy sources like you.

I never said only the rich deserve to have a pc and software. I simply suggested you get legal software because its beter in the long run. But if you choose to have illegal and bootleg updates and software on your pc then do it. I am not stopping you.

Here's an interesting point of view, while all the talk about being legal, how does a 16 year old enter into a legal agreement with M$ win any agreement has to be executed by an adult of legal age? So you may have activated your copy of windows, but YOU did not register it. If you did then your copy of Windows isn't legal either. It states on M$ site that you must be 18 to. I have said it before and will say it again, there are more used computers out there floating around then there are new. And if you buy a used computer and get a great deal on it tell me that you will run out and spend $200 for XP for it so it will be legal? Aside from that lets look ahead a little bit in 5-8 months the new version of Windows will retail at $600 for Vista Ultimate Edtion, so you go to ebay get a great deal on a computer then your going to toss $600 for the OS? kind of makes that ebay deal bad now don't it, I am not condoning piracy at all, but there are to many used computers out there that can be very useful with a little more RAM, and a few updates here and there. Now one could make the argument that you my friend are encouraging Hacking, since the last year of updates for Windows 2k/XP have all been security updates that the majority all titled "To stop code exicution...." so going off on some one for install security updates to their computer would be like runing over a Child in the street and yelling it's his fault for not using the crosswalk!

 

Yeah they know what they are doing thats why Febuary's update was being thrown out, and there wasn't one for March at all! Febuary's messes up your TCP settings and you have to drop to a command prompt to override it, and lately there is software written just to fix the mess, some available right here at Major Geeks! to say that M$ knows what they are doing is like saying that Windows ME is a great OS, when even M$ laughs at the entire idea. Now if they are so good at it then there wouldn't be any updates, and before you even start yes there is a OS that is good enough to not put updatres out every day, Have you looked at the list of updates just this year for XP, or do you just sit back and let M$ do it. There are 9 for June alone! want to see all the updates for this year? go to http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html it is staggering how many there are. Now in defense of everyone how you get your computer to here doesn't matter, all that matters is that your here!

Look DakZ, I with my own money, bought this pc with a legal copy of Windows XP, so I can register and activate it if I want, hence its my pc. My parents did not contribute at all to the price of this pc, so they have nothing to do with it. And if by me activiating my software you claim is illegal now? Come on you got to have more common sense. Microsoft hasnt told me its illegal, so dont open your fat mouth and tell me it is.

If you buy a used pc, there a chance it might have bootleg XP, and yes if i was that cheap to buy a old pc, I would definitely upgrade it to legal status cause its worth it. Not that people like you would understand, but those with common sense would. Ans as for paying 600 bucks for Vista, I have the money to do so but I wouldnt since I like XP Home as it is, that was pretty dumb of you to ask that. Gerting an old pc isnt bad, but getting it with illegal XP is just dumb and its a ripoff.

If your not condoning piracy, then simply agree with me that buying XP is much better than having MS bug her about getting it legalized. Its plain and simple. And no I dont encourage hacking. I keep my pc updated cause I have the status to do so.

heres a tip noob, keep your bootleg software cause Im done with you I dont need to argue with noobs over to legalize their XP, mine is legalized and yes I respect MS that much to keep it legalized and updated and I dont need 2 noobs complaining over how to keep their bootleg XP running. The day you want to be free from all this, just order a new copy and there are many places that sell it cheap instead of those warez sites where yours came from. I helped alot of people on this forum, but Im through with you. And one last thing, even at 16, I still know more than you will ever know about pcs, cause im the one whos legal and your not, so get lost noob.
