I am running win xp professional with sp3. Microsoft had 13 fixes out this past tuesday, two of them will not install

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)

How do I get these to install?

    g'day harry bosch

i had this same issue.i solved this by shutting down the computer it still took a while to install these two updates.on the another computer i have i just left it to install and it took about 1 hour for it to complete. are you getting any type of error message like update failure or are they just not completing.

    Hi

Could try the Patch Registration Cleanup Tool which clears the update list as those two maybe saying they are installed but are in relality not, needs a reboot once run, then try Windows Update again.

The longer way around is to uninstall all .Net versions using this .Net Cleanup Tool and then run Windows update again to install .Net 3.5

Thanks iwunderdownunder and halo for your replies. I got one tower computer to download all of the fixes after I installed Revo Uninstaller and uninstalled everything having to do with NET framework. I then started with NET framework 1.1 and started reinstalling.

On tower #2, this same process did not quite work, I uninstalled everything NET but there was one NET service pack 1.1 that would not install.

There is no error message shown, all it will say after an unsuccessful install is "some updates were not installed".

Halo, I had already tried the patch registration cleanup tool. It wouldn't install for me because my win xp is 32 bit. I've had slightly better luck using net clean up tool on tower #2. No problem reinstalling NET framework 1.1 but NET framework 1.1 service pack 1 wants to install thru updates but will not install.

I'm just trying to get rid of the nag that pops up from the sys tray on startup, that "there are updates to be installed."

what you can try is navigate to your windows folder locate the software distribution folder inside you will find a download folder open and delete its contents.then reboot the computer and let auto updates download a new copy of .net 1.1sp1.the installer for this update may be corrupt and deleting and downloading a new may correct it.
    good luck.

After uninstalling, then reinstalling NET 1.1, all then trying to install all of the various service packs, I am formatting and reinstalling win xp on my 3 tower computers

I hope it works out for you. Are you trying to do these updates via Automatic Updates? If so, here is a simple fix that I have used on large updates like that, and I am on a dial up connection.

I also have Windows XP Pro SP3 and all you have to do, is open your security center, and look at the Automatic Updates is on. now, click on that, and turn it off. Check the button that says, "turn off AU " then, apply, OK, and close it. Now, you will see that cute little warning, AU is off. Open it back up, and click the "turn on A.U." then apply , OK, and you will see it is back on.. ;)

The reason for this, is A.U. will recycle, and recheck for updates, and yes, I have used that method a few times with large updates, and I got that from Microsoft... Works out well for me, and it sure is easier than reformatting and reinstalling on 3 towers... Give it a whirl. Sometimes, those HUGE downloads kinda get stuck I think...This just gives them a fresh install... ;)

Thanks TeeCee, but I'm almost done with XP reinstalls on 2 towers. I forgot to mention that windows live messenger and my microsoft lifecam 5000 also weren't working properly.
I was downloading all of the updates from windows download page

I hope you are sticking to security/critical.
Don't download any hardware updates suggested. I've had things broken in the past by doing this. I've learned to not look in the section of the update page.
