Having all kinds of problems with my DELL 8600 lap top. Running Windows XP home edition, service pack 2. 1 gig of memory, Intel (R) Pentium (R) M, 1400 MHz. Windows crashes frequently, I cannot install Windows 7 or the updated media player. Download fines but won't install. When I type, text appears where it shouldn't. I have been told that a cure all is to download a fresh copy of XP. If this is true I wonder if the on line version would work. This outfit claims you can download it on line for 40.00. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks

There's no way of knowing without any clue who this "outfit" you mentioned actually is. Could you provide the name of the outfit and a link to where it states that you can "download a fresh copy of XP" for only $40 bucks?

Just curious here: Why do you need to "buy" an XP download? Since you own a "DELL" you should have been given a copy of Windows XP and there should be a "sticker" on the side of your laptop which has the 25-digit product key that you can use to activate XP. You can use these to reinstall Windows, if need be.

If you do not have the XP install disk (and you can prove that you own the computer) if I were you I were you I'd call Dell support at 1-800-WWW-DELL and ask them about it or visit the Dell support at here

Related Side Note: I recently bought a Dell 8400 online (from eBay). It came without the Windows XP Installation disk but had a 90 day Dell warrantee. I don't really like Dell or the 8400 model. I prefer to build my own. This was a gift for a relative who's going back to school next month who loves this particular Dell model.

Anyway, because it came without the XP disk, just for the heck of it; I contacted the "live online" DELL support. I explained that this purchase was for a relative who was going back to school and would likely need the install disk. After they confirmed that I actually owned the Dell 8400; they said that they would not only sent me the Windows XP install disk w/sp2; but all of the other Dell related software disks that originally came with the 8400 as well!

You could have knocked me over with a feather when the Dell support person assured me that I would get the disks "free of any charge whatsoever" in about two or three days! After I hung up I got an e-mail confirmation. Sure enough, two days later the doorperson in my building called and said that there was a small package from Dell. I was really surprised by all of this because I'm not a "regular" customer by any means and I've heard many people complain that Dell support was lousy; but I have to admit, they did right by me! ;)

P.S. A HUGE thank you to Matacumbie for this recent post; without which I would never in a million years have even considered contacting Dell online – thanks again, Matacumbie!

    Good Luck!

I got the price of 34.95 when I did a search at "Ask" search. When I went to the web site www.unlimiteddownloadcenter.com they had categories for music, movies and games but I didn't see software. I wrote to them about it.

My experience with DELL has been an unhappy one. I just purchased a new computer and it certainly wasn't a DELL.

I lost my cd with XP on it; don't know what happened to it. I do have the license key from the bottom of my computer.Have tried to contact microsoft about helping me but haven't found a link yet.

Do you think that reinstalling will resolve my before mentioned problems? Thanks

    HI!
Read about that site here: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/unlimiteddownloadcenter.com?ref=safe&aff_id=0
Not ME! I wouldn't touch a download from there with a 10 foot pole!
An XP CD can be found for reasonale price via a Google Search and Microsoft will send you the Service Pack 2 CD for a approx. $4 shipping charge.

Have a look at this: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search.php?form_keyword=microsoft+windows+xp+home+&topcat_id=6

When you type, text appears where it shouldn't, does this happen everywhere? Including here at MG? Or only certain apps?

What you say, you downloaded IE7, but can't install the program, are ye sure you have the full download? As in, what is the file size for the file in question?

Are ye the admin on this computer?
