    Hello fellow MGs,

I recently installed win2K over win98 on a machine, it asked me if I wanted to reformat while doing so and I selected reformat as FAT32 (it is a very small HD).

So far everything was fine until I tried to delete a file from the hard drive, every time I try to delete something, explorer.exe crashes and my desktop reloads .. so basically I cannot delete anything... I only succeded under cmd.exe.

Then I thought maybe the win2K install kept some old registry files from the old 98 system... but then I wouldnt know how to replace these old reg. with new ones.
Any ideas what I should try? run a registry check (how?), replace explorer.exe (how?), reinstall the whole thing?

Any help on this would be very appreciated, thx
the specs at bottom are not for this computer im talking about.

it also happens when I single click an image.... it seems to be related to displaying information or something.

anyway im close to reformatting the whole drive and re-installing again anyway... im pretty sure installing win2k over 98 didnt help at all in this case.

I agree, a clean install is always better than an over-the-top upgrade.
2k is a totally different OS from 98, you're just asking for trouble and leftover junk on your drive. If it's a small drive you want to run lean.
Also, choosing a file system should not depend on disk size, I'd go with NTFS over FAT32.

Is it possible to format the hard drive from Win2K without using the install method?

they way I remember doing it when I had win98 was typing format /s .. any way to do that with win2K?

When you install the OS, you're given the option to select the partition you wish to install to. You're then given the options of a) format with NTFS, b) format with FAT32, and c) use current file system (no format). You can also delete the current partitions and require Windows 2000 Setup to create a new one, but that should not be necessary.
