Probs installing original W98

I have to install W98 on an ancient DESKTOP PC which is unable to handle anything more modern (it only has 32MB RAM!)

My other two computers are laptops (one runs W2K Pro, and the other runs XP Home)

I reformatted the C: drive on the desktop and part-installed W98 from the original installation disk which I found among a pile of my equally ancient CDs. However it is asking me for the product code before it completes the installation. I have searched EVERYWHERE(!) and cannot find it (it's a miracle I managed to find the original W98!, but could not find the disk or the sleeve it came with originally!) I

thought MG's Magical Jellybean Keyfinder would be the solution, but the problem is it can only retrieve the product code from an already installed system (i.e. I can't boot the PC from the startup disk, run Keyfinder from A: and point it at the registry on C:, since it must run under windows and windows will not finish registration until it has the key - classic chicken and egg problem!!!) Can anyone suggest a solution???

    Your help is much appreciated

if the computer your installing it on was a shop bought one pre installed with 98 it should have a sticker on the side somewhere with the key
anyway is it 98 se or just 98 your installing as ive got an old 98 se tower(scrap) laying about with a key but no cd dont know if this is allowed here but i can let you have the key so you can install it

I wouldn't see any reason why it would be a problem to give 'em your key, since no one is generating or stealing a key from someone oblivious to the transaction. Make it a Christmas present to one of the fellow geeks here in the community! :)

    Case closed

    Guys,

many thanks for the kind offer (all of you)! I have luckily found my original old key (like you said - on a sticker underneath the computer!

    Cheers

PS: in the process, I found a useful proggie that is similar to the magic jellybean finder on MG but that works directly from DOS (however, it still can't extract the product key prior to installation)

32 is very low for memory. I did Beta on a Dx2-66 and it ran, but I had 96 meg (at the time a large amount).
