Processes won't end

First and foremost, I'm new to this stuff and while I understand the basics feel free to talk down to me.

My computer has been runnning really slow lately. I assume it's because there are to many processes running in the background. With most of them I don't know which ones to close and which are essential, but the ones I do recognize and try to close simply won't. I pull open the windows task manager and click a process and tell it to end tree but it keeps on running.

Rebooting my computer takes roughly 15 minutes and requires me to manually stop processes DVDCheck, sgtray, and CCAPP. When windows finally does reboot it is still slow if I open a program the process will continue to run even after the program is ended. Further many programs freeze up and stop responding. Also my event viewer has 30-40 different errors and 40-50 different warnings.

    Anyone have a suggestion?

I'd like to see those errors in your event viewer. Also, have you tried process explorer by sysinternal? to help kill those processes. If THAT doesn't kill it, then something is definately fubar.

I downloaded that program... it's just like windows task manager and looks like it would be really helpful if I knew what I was doing. At any rate, it isn't able to terminate most processes I've been having trouble with once the program freezes, and programs are still freezing up.

    Some of the errors are:

You can always try using enditall 2, with that you can close, or kill programs that arent needed. also ends processes that arent essential. Works good.
This may help speed you up untill you figure out whats up with those errors

by chance, do you have a CD in your cd-rom drive ALL the time?

All the time? No... most of the time? Yeah... is this a problem? Because if this was the root of all my problems I'm gonna need someone to smack me upside the head.

Removing CDs from my drive doesn't speed up my shutdown or keep alternate programs for freezing or allow me to turn off processes, but I will keep my CDs out in the future. Any more suggestions please?

First thing I would do is to stop all programs loading at startup. The only progs I load at start are an AV prog, my personal diary and systray. From there I control what I want to use including logging on to the net with either Opera7 or Firefox. Could be you also have a helluva lot of spyware looking in at startup.
    Hope this helps

How do I go about stopping programs from loading at startup? And which ones should I use? And how do I know which ones I need? Would it help to see my Hijack This file? Thanx for the help!

I use "Start Up Control Panel 2.8" by Mike Lin

I use it on WIN ME, works fine

I think I got it here at MG

It's accessed thru the control panel after installing

The problem is alot worse than I thought. I tried to instal Spybot S & D and some other programs and nothing will instal. As they are installing they freeze up and just sit there. I can't close these frozen processes with either Process Explorer or Windows Task Manager.

    Control+Alt+Delete>End Task isnt working either?

Ctrl + Alt + Delete and ending processes doesn't work. That's the Windows Task Manager that I mention.

Youve probably tried this, but is your START UP folder in Start>all programs startup empty?

  16. Primine

    Primine Private E-2

Not empty. It has microsoft office.

  17. Jazagod

well deleting that would chop some time, unless thats all you use. you can always start it up from start menu when you need it right.

i mentioned that enditall 2 yesterday too, its about 800kb (zipped) i think it would help your frustration lots. unfortunately it needs to be installed and you mentioned that you cant install anything??
another handy tool is regseeker, this does not need to be installed, and finds lots, and lots of garbage, run that a few times and you may see some improvement on speed.

Without any knowledge of your system I am still of the view that you are
    a. Loading too much at startup. MS Office alone puts a huge draw on resources at startup. Did you try to reduce everything to the absolute minimum at startup. To do this go to RUN and type msconfig click on the startup tab and untick everthing except systray and your AV. (I assume you are running XP).
b.Reboot - if the system is still firing up slow with all these warnings then I would be looking for spyware/malware/trojans. To do this go to the spyware forum and carry out all the actions listed at READ ME FIRST http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407.
    c. If all the above does'nt solve the problem then I would be looking to do a repair job using the repair facility on the XP CD.
    d. If still no resolution I would reformat and start from scratch but others may have a different view.
    e. I hope it all turns out well for you.
    Robert

I've already tried looking for spyware/malware/trojans, and I'm going to try to repair with the CD. The problem isn't the start up though... the reboot takes a long time because it takes my computer 15 minutes to shut down... starting it up doesn't take long at all. Does this indicate a different problem?

Also I installed a HP DVD Writer (dvd630i) a while back and I was wondering if the background processes DVDTray, DVDCheck and DVDBitSet were critical for it's operation. Anyone know?
