I have 43 processes running. One of the dspispl.exe seems to be using most of the CPU cycles. What is it and do I need it??

it's not any process that I'm familiar with.. doesn't sound good. Have you scanned for Viruses recently?

43 running processes is far too many - I am currently running 20.
Go to pacs-portal. The site contains a massive listing of processes with yes, no or user choice advice regarding startup processes. It sounds like you have processes that are contained in your startup config that don't need to be there. I use a startup manager to control these processes - many applications will automatically config as startups which it totally unnecessary. The site contains links to several startup managers - my preference is CodeStuff Starter. The site also contains a small executible of the process listing that you can download for future reference. I was able to reduce my running processes from over 50 to an average of 20.

Also, AnswersThatWork has a good reference library of processes. You will be amazed by the increase in performance.

    Take care,

    Slim

depends on what you use your machine for.. I'm running a server os here and I have 42 Processes running. 37 if you remove the applications that are loaded.

    Kodo,

Agreed - should have stated "43 processes sounds high - depends on your circumstances". Both sites are nice learning tools for anyone interested in processes & were very useful for my stand-alone machine.

Your search - dspispl.exe - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing "dspispl".

-taken from a google search... is that the exact process name??? also, i've noticed that pre-assembled computers from reputable companies such as Gateway, Dell, Hewlitt Packard, etc have alot more running processes on them then self assembled computers... alotta those processes are related to packaged software that comes with the computer, installed by the particular company...

here's a great data base for checking running processes:

    http://answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

When I was removing spyware from my friends Gateway PC i noticed he had like 40+ running processes so I cross referenced them with the Task List from the above website and alot of the stuff was harmless but didn't need to be running and was related to other software on his computer that was pre-installed before he received it, so don't panic just yet....

one easy thing you can do to eliminate the processes is to use msconfig util....

    click Start
    select Run
    then type msconfig

from here you can deselect the programs that load on startup that are not needed. If you are pressed for cpu, deselect the items you can click an icon for to load rather than it run at startup.it will also improve your boot up time and shutdown time.

As far as spyware goes, I use what i call my "holy Trinity" Ad-aware, spybot s&d, and spysweeper. Spysweeper (IMO) seems to do a deeper scan and has more spyware definitions than the other two. Try those two things out n see what comes of it.

misconfig can be used to edit your startup programs. I personally prefer a startup manager due to ease of use. With CodeStuff Starter you simply uncheck a box to remove a process from startup. If you change your mind, you can go back & recheck the box to put the process back in startup. Also, Starter does not list any processes which are required to boot up - a nice safety feature. You can place a shortcut on your desktop & check your startups periodically.

BTW, if you are interested in system services go to blackviper.com. Fantastic info source for system services in pdf form that you can save to your HD Be cautious with any mods & be sure to save to HD first.

Glad to hear things are getting better. I just wish I had started using the MG message board sooner - it would have saved me countless hours & lowered my blood pressure. Soon your PC will be purring like a kitten.

    Best Wishes,

    Slim
