Something is running on my laptop when ever it is on line. CPU usage jumps all over the place.
What should be running when I start WinXP & how do I get rid of all the extra junk I don't need ?
Looks like I have 46 Processes running & all I did was turn the computer on. :( :( :(

For the process it should be around 25 with XP.

    So 46 it's a little hi ?!?

You must have maybe spyware and adware running

try to install ad-aware se and see if it clean thing up....

    Thats a pretty huge assumption...

I have 40 processes running, and thats with nothing open and half of my programs in the notification area shut off.

What process keeps jumping around in cpu useage?

I feel the same... I have 30 processes running using WinXP.

It took a little tweaking to get there (I could go to about 25 if I really wanted).

Much more than 30 or so, and I would start looking for files that can be disabled.

Unles tweaking is part of the subject line, its irrelevant.

Point is, with a firewall, antivirus, and a few other things at startup, then 46 is not off.

I have at least as many processes running and do not have these problems.

    Taskmgr, IEXPLORE,system, & system Idle.
IEX just went nuts and CPU usage went to 100% while I was watching it.
Hard drive is working and I am doing nothing (and haven't in the last 10 Min or more)
Yes I have anti spyware & anti adware programs installed on it.

System Idle Process always has high useage, you won't be chnaging that any time soon.

As for IE, thats due to plug ins with the browser, or high multimedia content on the website you are viewing. Now I will jump on the spyware bandwagon ;)

Better check again, because your programs may not be doing the job.
