How to determine processor / Mobo compatibility.

I am considering upgrading my Pentium Celeron D 320, 2400MHz processor with a Pentium 4 processor. How do I determine which processor(s) will be compatible with my Mobo? Also, are the other factors I should consider in my selection?

    Thanks

Your mobo and cou are socket 478 that the most important thing to look at,next you need to find out the make and model of your motherboard and check the support page,to check the fastest cpu it will accept or the one you wish to purchase, you may also need to install a little more cooling

Thanks for the information. I do not intend to go much higher than 3200 MHz with my new processor. I would not think that would require more cooling than what I have now, right? I searched on this site but could not find a link to any information on how to build your own system. Do you know of one that I missed?

    Thanks!

I have searched Google and Dell and I cannot find a site to tell me what processors will be compatible with my Dell 300 Mobo. Is the chipset an issue? My chipset is Intel Morgan Hill i865GV. Any clues as to where I can search for this information.

    Thanks!

The new intel cpu's run quite hot even with the standard boxed cooler, you need at least a 80mm intake and 120mm exaust not including the power supply fan and even then depending upon the airflow in your case the cpu may run too hot,I dont have any links at present believe it or not I have just lost all my bookmarks

All new boxed CPU's come with instructions on how to fit them,it really is a case of dropping it in clamping it down and clicking the heatsink into place.

I will have a look around to see if that cpu will fit your computer if I have time, you may struggle to power it though depending what psu you have in your dell :)

Are you sure its not a Dell 3000?does it say dimension or any other keyword like that,do you have any documentation

this is the page you should check

Yes, typo there, it is a 3000. I have been there numerous times with the bookmark deal. Fun, huh? Anyways, I guessed that I would probably have to replace the power supply. Actually..<ruffling through mess on desk>...I cannot find the damn thing. I will have to seek out new civiliza..I mean my book and see what it has in it for specs. Thanks for the assist.
