    Hi,

I have a NEC Versa M540 1800DR notebook around 2 years old, lately whenever I do intensive tasks or multiloads for more than 10 seconds, system crashes but can't figure out why. Tried updating processor driver but seems to have made it slightly worse.

    Any suggestions?

Welcome to MajorGeeks! Have you blown the 'cobwebs' out of the vents? Heatsinks clogged with dust and such will not cool properly. I use a can of 'air' on my laptop every few weeks to keep it clean.

Can you hear the fan? If the fan isn't working, that will kill the computer.
What kind of crash? Does it shut down or are you seeing any error messages?

I has thinking it is a heat related problem also. You can buy laptop cooling pads that are basically a thin platform with two fans that are powered by a USB port or by using an AC Adapter... here's a bunch of different ones: http://www.hardwarecooling.com/default.php/cat/33/Laptop_Cooling I've personally seen this one in action on a friend's laptop that was shutting down while gaming. It hasn't shut down since adding this cooler http://www.hardwarecooling.com/product_info.php/cat/33/prod/259/Bytecc_Aluminum_Notebook_Cooler?
