Problem is, most laptops will not let you replace the processor, due to majority are limited to the fact that they are either soldered in place, or limited to the design of the board. In other words, you are stuck buying a new laptop.

Unofficial FAQ for your laptop. http://www.envytech.co.uk/5000e/

Your laptop could support CPUs from 500-650 MHz. At 597 MHz, your laptop is near the top of the range already. I doubt a CPU upgrade would be economical though it is apparently possible.

Laptop overclocking is problematic. Overclocking generates lots of excess heat and laptops have a hard time with cooling as it is already.

I would suggest a memory upgrade if you wish to get some increased performance from your laptop. 128 MB is the bare minimum that Windows XP requires, 256 MB is what MS recommends and 512 MB is what many, including myself, have found suitable for everyday usage. Your laptop will support 512 MB maximum. You can buy 512 MB for your laptop for under $100.
