Processor running too hot?

I just built my first computer and first off, the specs:

    -Pentium 4 2.8E GHZ, 800mhz FSB, 1 mb cache
    -Abit IS7 motherboard
    -Other stuff

So anyways before buying the processor I read about it running hot but mine seems to be running excessively hot, at least according to Abit's Equalizer that tells me the CPU's temp.

It reports idle temperatures of about 120 F (48 C) and after playing True Crime I opened the program to see it's reported temperature at 144.5 F (62.5 C). This seems way too high. I believe I have pretty good ventilation (6 fans) and I used the stock heatsink and fan that came with it... Are these dangerously high temperatures or perhaps a problem with Abit's temp. reporting software program? Thanks...

    Dangerously high? No.

    That is warm though.

For that processor thats fine. If it gets any higher clean out any dust from inside the machine that's built up.

    i have the following specs

    3.0 ghz prescott
    intel 875 board

i have the same temperature reports as BrandonR

can anyone tell me if these are normal for prescott? and at what temperature does performance start getting bad hits???

mine idle is around 50 C and on far cry shoots up to anything around 58-62 C

i have two fans plus stock p4 prescott fan and HT casing

Prescotts are notorious for running hot, but they can do without any problems. You're not going to have any problems running at stock speeds with a cooler thats made for that CPU.

they break at 80*C, well.. break.. they'll throttle down to 50% orso of their usual speed to allow the processor to cool down a bit and you to keep on computing, actually a pretty neat function of the P4's.

Mmm, it is, compared to AMDs which just start to burn if you dont cool them sufficiently :p Palinto was the worst culprit i seem to remember for thermal control.

dude, that's ancient, that article's valid for the pre-XP's. XP's have some form of thermal protection built in, it'll just shut down on you, which is quite annoying I must add.

Yeah yeah, guess I shoulda put it in the past tense :p and not all XPs have the same protection built in. The Bartons will just shut down just before they start to die, but I think the TB's would just stop working but not actually shut down. I can't remember exactly.

But in any case, my motherboard has protection anyway which shuts the whole system down if its overheating, of if it detects a fan failure. Kinda annoying if you have a fan that doesnt NEED to be pluged into the mainboard, with just a wire for RPM detection, coz it wont boot if its not plugged in, an them fan header cables are easy to pull out!

    Long Ongoing Discussion

There has been a long ongoing discussion about the ABIT MOBO’s high temperature readings. The general agreement among ABIT posters is the MOBO’s are registering inaccurately high temperatures.

Agreed, I suffer from this myself. But even with the inacurate reading, the temp is fine for a prescott.

Thanks everyone, guess I was just getting paranoid from my motherboard beeping at me every 10 seconds telling me my processor was too hot... Disabling the beep helped a lot. :)

The Prescotts are notorious for running hot, they are 100 watt CPU's and really draw a lot of heat. The upcoming dual-core Pentiums based off the Pentium M chip should have the heat issue non-existant.

oh yeah they are. running a prescott myself, i can easily say that 50-60+C temps are perfectly normal. but of course, i'm running water, so i'm getting 45C load temps:-/

    Stupid intel.

Oh yeah, i can't wait for the dual core systems. they should be hecka slick:)
