Processor Socket Question....

I am going to replace a bad motherboard on a pc. The question is, the socket on the board is marked "492". It has an AMD XP 3000 processor. Is a 492 socket the same as a Socket "A"? It seems most boards that support AMD proc's havew a socket A?

 

492? do you mean 462?

Socket A is also Know as socket 462, which is what Amd XP 3000 cpu is, the XP 3000 was or is avaible with 333fsb or 400fsb
The 462 is the number of pins on the cpu or the socket it fit's into.

What brand & model PC are you thinking about replacing the motherboard?
Some brands wont just accept any socket A mobo.

There are others, look for NForce chipset
Stay away from Asrock & PC Chips mobo's they are the bottom of the barrel!

Hello Asus, I am new to this site so I have not had the time to read alot of the posts yet. I do wish to say that not all of us can drive a Cadillac some of us have to drive a Chevy. I love ASUS motherboards, I still have my P5A-B running 600Mhz(K6/2+550) with 786 megs of ram. I have noticed that you say ASROCK mobos are "bottom of the barrel".
Do you speak from experience? I have built and sold a half a dozen PC's using ASROCK boards in the last 6 months. I have yet to have ANY problems with this brand. I would appreciate knowing about some of the concerns you have experienced or heard about. Thanks for your time. GATO
