Processor speed idea

I have been on this forum long enough to know that I am entering territory with this thread that I probably should not because it is such a wide open topic. However, I have to go there anyway.:)

I have one desktop computer that features an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 2.83 Ghz processor.

I have another desktop that has an AMD Phenom IIx2 560 3.30Ghz processor.

I am going to ask the forum for just a simple across the board type answer. BELIEVE ME I know it is not simple to begin with. I am more than aware of the unlimited diversification in configurations, but, try to help me anyway.

I know there are all types of LAPTOP processors. I am trying to get examples of what AMD and Intel processors IN LAPTOPS might as close as possible resemble the speed of one or both of the desktops. I am trying to pick out an HP Probook laptop from the HP Business Outlet store.

I want to go bargain basement. Therefore I am interested in i3 and i5's; AMD 8's and 6's. Would any of those four resemble the speed of one or both of my desktops? If not then give me an idea somehow of up or down in speed comparison.

Thanks for bearing with me on a can of worms type question. I'm just trying to get an idea of whether to go with i3, i5, AMD 8 or AMD 6.

    Hi

Not a bad question and I think its one in which you need to do a lot of research work on and one good place to start is HERE and do some search & comparisons of the various CPUs. I can take at times a month to review what I really want, do all components work well together etc

Did a very quick one to see how this could work and compared your Q9550 with the equivalent test speed, but do look at them in more depth.

i5 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=1049&cmp[]=818 you may struggle to get a mobile i3 CPU close to what you want, and AMDs I don't know their mobile range as I do Intel. Once you have a comparrison then research reviews on said CPU and model variants of laptop to gain an overview.

Then with laptops also look at RAM specs and what type of HDD does it have, see if they have 7200RPM HDDs (a SSD is better but much more expensive)

    Thanks DavidGP,

Right after I wrote the new thread topic I found the exact same location. It was invaluable to zeroing me in on some speed expectations. Good site.

Thanks again for replying to my post.

We can help a lot more if we know the intended use. Will you be watching movies, surfing the web, gaming or editing video?
Laptops can be optimized better than desktops due to limited hardware options. You may not need to be 100% as fast as your desktop.
