I've searched the forum for the answer but to no avail. When buying a new comp. Which processor is deemed the best for surfing, small business, and burning DVD's? Pent 4, Athlon or Celeron? Just wondered what people think. Thanks.

I think what all of us really look for is; Cost :: Performance :: Productivity in that order, what is your budget? when buying a processor you need a couple of things to go with it most likely then not including memory and power supply.

I dont' think I was very plain about what I was searching for. My daughter is going to buy a new Comp and wondered it the Pent/Ath/Cel is better. Which is cheapest?/costliest? and which is better regardless of cost. Sorry if this isn't as plain as it should be. Thanks again

Best performance vs price is always AMD, I suggest to look for an A64 with an SLI motherboard as "futureproof" is money isnt such an issue. Dont bother with celerons and athlons/ AMD XP's, or anything under AMD 64 3000+/ Pentium 4 3.0ghz. Thats just my recommendation, computers dont come every day, so if your gonna put your hard earned money down get something a ltitle above decent (or at least the max your budget holds).

Thanks. That was the answer I was looking for. Will pass that along to daughter. Then she'll prob go out and buy what I tell her not to.

If your little girl, is not into gaming, you can SKIP the SLI board, and just use a normal 939 board (AMD).

But, if she is a HARDCORE gamer, then, yes, SLI is the way to go.

Since the ATI crossfire cards are rare....nowadays.....

At Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving, you can get an eMachines Intel Celeron D Processor 340 Computer w/ 17" CRT Monitor for $149.99. This will probably be all that your daughter will need if she doesn't use her computer for games. But, if you wanted to step up to an Athlon 64 (which I would suggest), there will be an eMachines AMD64 3200+ Computer w/ 15" LCD and Color Printer for $399.99. Pretty good deals if you can fight the crowds...

W.E. Thanks forthe info. I will say I haven't heard much good about emachines. 2 other kids (thank heaveans they are in Ill) have 'em and nothing but probs. Course the have ME OS, so that may be part of the prob.

Yeah, they could very well be related to WinME. I really haven't heard too much bad about eMachines other than the power supply is always smaller, so if you do get one, you may want to buy a new case and power supply. (Case also because the power supply might be non-standard)

    Hi folks, first post!!11eleventyone

I have a ? about the emachine at Best Buy. Would I be able to add RAM with ease, and which version of DirectX would the "card" be able to run? I would lik esomething that could run Half Life 2, and HL2 can be run on all DX9 and down.

THanks for your time and consideration,
    ooohrah.

jarhead yes you would be able to add ram with ease however a emachine of that caliber is better suited for just internet use and word processing, itll play games but not like an amd 64 will.

in regard to emachines theyre cheaper gateways, theyre tech help is nonexistant unless you pay for it. every emachine i get in shop for repair is horrible at doing anything.

offered to build a friend a pc but his wife "insisted " on a store bought machine and got an e machine(top of the line)1200 or so i believe.tried to load a game and the poor thing crashed on him. pci e slot removed from the board and down to 2 ram slots. sad really to have a neutered board. good enough for word processing and internet but thats about it
