    Hi World,

Just a random thought, after a friend and I had a conversation last night, I was wondering what other I.T people were thinking, if eating in the server room or main on your main pc / station was band...how much do you think your company's I.T productivity would diminish..say as a percentage?

In other words if your an I.T pro and work all hours, sometimes breaks can be hard to come by...how much productivity would decrease if you had to stop and remove yourself from your workstation for your meal breaks...

Interested to here what the community thinks on this one... yeah its a bit random I knowrolleyes...:cool:wave

According to me, I never eat in a server room. It is simply not necessary. If someone tells me there isn't enough time, I simply don't take it cause taking a break is good for your concentration plus how much productive will you be if you were eating and trying to work in a SERVER room. I even suggest to take a long break for lunch if the admin is always working (0.5-1 hour) in which he goes some other place than the office or building, just for a change. Once he's back from the break, he will be all freshed up!

Vastly. I don't mind breaks, but when they have to jump up and run out to hunt down food, it really cuts the time they have in the room. Letting them eat there and even having it brought to them is by far the better option, even if they do stop working to eat.

I don't care what job you're doing, you should always take at least a half-hour to walk completely away from it once in the middle of your shift to eat or whatever else you feel like doing that is not work. It refreshes your brain, it clears away the lethargy (heck, it helps prevent blood clots in your legs). In my industry, taking either a 30-minute paid (and fed) break or a 60-minute unpaid (unfed) break once every five hours is standard procedure. During the 30 minute breaks we go to another place in the building to eat, away from our work stations, and during them our supervisors are not allowed to continue talking to us about work-related items. When we come back, we are ready to get back at it again, and often have a solution to a problem that was bogging us down before lunch...your brain continues to work in the background even when you're reading a magazine instead of actively thinking about it.

Eating near any kind of computer, however, especially a server, is a poor idea. If you insist on eating in the same room with the server, please at least move to a table or desk away from the actual machine. One spilled Mountain Dew and you're working a LOT more hours.
