Program Development

HI,

How many of you guys actually use structure chart, flow chart or pseudocodes? I am starting to learn C, and I am reading this book which puts a lot of importance on going through this development cycle when writing a software. While obviously it would seem a good idea to follow this cycles if I were to start a big project; but on "small" (define small!) project too? Structure chart is the only one that seemed reasonable to me. But I am just a beginner, what can I say; that's why I am asking you guys.

Depends on how complex of a program it is. If it is something that takes a lot of logic I will create myself psuedocode so I make sure I have the correct run down of what I have to do. If its just a litle program like all the perl code I posted up here I just jump right in because I know what to do and where to go.

 

If the program is complex or involves a lot of subroutines, I'll trace it through using pen and paper. then, i can usually catch most of the errors before i even start coding

 

Hey im in my 3rd year in college doing Software Development and im first year they bombarded us with things like that. The thing is in my first year i never did anything so complex that i really needed to use flowcharts or any of that and subsequently i never did use them.

But as the programs get bigger and you find your self wondering what exactly you were trying to accomplish in this bit of code you will be thankfull that you made your self some charts etc.

As a beginner just learn how to do them but there is no great need for them yet. But you will need them later.
