I know nothing about this stuff...I believe my sister is being scammed (love scam). The idiot emailing her had the nerve to email me for money to come see her (he is supposed to be from UK). He also gave a phone #. Any way I can trace either with some type of program or anything!

    Hi

If anyone is aking you for money so that they can come to your country to meet up then its a scam.

Sadly you cannot trace a phone number unless your in the security services, but if its a non-mobile/cell number you maybe able to get the address from here http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha but you will need name and hopefully an area they live in.

http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/section/tci/locator.shtml this should give you idea if the number is potentially a valid UK number.

Thanks..Halo and TimW!! I tried the 2 addresses you left to get info, but no luck. The number I have begins with country code 44...but does not continue with a zero as I assume it should. The next 2 digits are "70" as in 44 70....I would finish giving the number, but figure it may not be legal to post it. I read somewhere on a UK gov. site about the telecom industry that the "70" may designate it to be a "personal services number", but it didn't explain what that meant....

I know...in my mind without a doubt...that he is scamming her...just found out she paid for an airline ticket for him last year to come visit...didn't show of course. I know he cashed it in, but she is lonely and gullible and has a hearing problem...she is ripe for the picking and she just don't believe me. He does not sound like an Enlishman to me....broken English and funny accent. I believe he is "promising to come visit again".

I have the header details from his email, but I understand it is virtually impossible to trace back to its origination. As you can tell, I don't know much about the cyberworld. Thanks again for what help you gave.

+44 is the country code for the UK and assuming my memory serves me correctly you leave off the 0 when you add the country code.

The number beginning 7 could be a mobile phone number (UK mobile number start 07, leave the 0 off for international and there's your answer) or perhaps a 'personal services number' but I don't know what that is either...

Only thing I can suggest is to bar his email (should be easy to block if you can get on her PC) and phone number (not so easy as the phone company won't listen to anyone but the account holder) if you can. Don't expect to be thanked for yuor efforts though until she realises it's a con. I don't know if there is a lot else that can be done since she is a 'willing' partner at this stage. The UK police would be able to trace the IP or phone number to his computer and home address.

It's not the first time I've heard about this, it's common enough that it made a TV program not so long ago.

    Good luck.
