    Hello Major Geeks

When I try to install a program I get a window saying:

    16 BIT WINDOWS SUBSYSTEM
D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS DOS & MICROSOFT WINDOWS APPLICATIONS.

I am running Windows XP Pro

    Thanks for any assistance

just be sure to correct the path names, as i see your windows installation is on the D drive, not the C.

so instead of where it says

    expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

    you'll want
    expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ D:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

where of course "CD-ROM drive letter" is replaced with the actual drive letter of your CD-ROM drive containing the windows disc]

Oh, and Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Hello InYearsToCome

I tried Microsofts suggestion and although it says the Autoexec.nt file is expanded, I still doesn't work to open programs.

    Thanks for you help

I had the same problem. It seems that my Autoexec.nt file was removed from the system32 directory. I restored it, but now every time I log off a user account, the file is deleted. I need to re-copy it from the windows\repair directory every time I want to use a 16 bit program.

I can prevent this from happening by making the file read-only, but that is probably not a suitable solution.
