Programming project ideas

    Hi,

I'm a computer programmer using C# .NET, and I'm out of ideas.

Typically, I try to make stuff that's useful to the average person, or a particular group of people. (Examples would include encryption, note-storage, computer-control software, and so on.)

I've made a few small games, but I want to stay away from that for a while until I've got a little more spare time on my hands. I've got nifty game ideas already, so I don't need game idea suggestions! :p

Would anyone happen to have some good ideas? I don't really need practice ideas as much as I need project ideas.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Quarker :cool

what are the main abilities of this programming language? if i know the limitations im sure i can think of a good useful program or project to make

C# is just as powerful as any other programming language, with a very nice syntax. You can do pretty much anything in it really.

then what are your past projects?

I've got a few projects but nothing serious, just "practice" stuff no one would really use -

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29551413/Website%20Test/QuarkSoft/images/quarkcryption.png - My nifty little encryption program

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29551413/Website%20Test/QuarkSoft/images/zapple.png - My nifty little note-keeper program

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29551413/Website%20Test/QuarkSoft/images/back2work.png - My nifty little "progress-firewall" program for blocking programs (for when you're working, should be working, or to block little kids from important stuff :-D)

I've got a few other things banging around, but it's not much worth presenting. I've got an image editor somewhere, a picture-viewer (to replace Windows's ugly default image viewer), and a translation-application using Google Translate's web API.

could you make a program that can update a large amount of installers? and maybe allow you to chose which installers to update?

also can i get a copy of the encrypter?

I don't like to make software that's already floating around, so here's a site that already manages installers - http://ninite.com/

    I don't have a copy of the encryption program anymore, sorry - that's just a screenshot :-o

ok in that case how about a programm that can handle compiling differnt scripting languages effectivly including java script, vbs, batch, and some other languages such as html and covers hta formating?

Javascript, VBS and batch aren't compiled languages, you can do all of them in notepad :S

Notepad++ can handle them all perfectly though, no need to remake that in my opinion.

I try to make software that could be useful for the "average" person (note-keeping software for example) that's both simple and fast.

ok i see i was thinking more personal if its for a broad spectrum of people maybe something like a program that pops up reminders that cant be ignored(like u cant click out of them until they have been read) for various things or maybe a program that can turn audio into text(its complicated and been done but most of them tend to be insanly expensive) or a program that automates several maintnence tasks based on user difened settings.

also if you ever remake that encryptor can i get a copy?
and id love to see the image viewer and the editor

A reminders program would be useful actually, one that makes you scroll to the bottom before enabling the "Close" button (like a lot of software's TOS text!)

Audio -> Text is tricky though, I don't have the time / resources to do that at the moment; I can put that on the list though.

Batch can automate maintenance tasks, but I could make a program that routinely cleans a folder (dropbox, downloads, cache, etc) every so often (defined by user)

I'm terrible at coming up with ideas until I get a general pitch

same normally i dont think of what to make batch files for until they end up being needed then i rush to make them most the time(only exception is my color changer which i did to get better with variables)

Hopefully someday I'll be able to make something useful

i know the feeling i hope i helped with some good idea's and i checked that site it doesnt just download the installers it silently installs them as well i only need it to download them to keep an updated suite of maintenence tools that i use at work for tech support and such

I personally have a thumb-drive with a folder full of self-updating software on it (CCleaner, MSE, etc) that I use for PC Repair

at work we use installers instead of portables and installers sadly arnt self updating

Most software is actually, after installing it quickly checks its version against the current version online, provided you're connected to the 'net, and self-updates if you accept.

At least, all the software I use is! :-D

yes the software is but not its installers we install the software on the machine needing repair and then uninstall when we are done

Oh, I see! Sorry, I usually leave the software on the PC with instructions so they can maintain it in the future. LOL

It'd be tricky to maintain a database of constantly updating software installers, honestly. It's be very process-expensive, too.
