I bought a new bigger hard drive. I used carbonite to put all my files on the new drive. Carbonite did not give me the programs. I no longer have the installation disks for a lot of my programs. Can I run my programs off my old drive if I use it for a slave?

    Greetings, Fran1206.

Depends on the programs - some will run fine from a slave drive, especially if they're self-contained. More often than not, however, program paths should be contained within a single drive - if an application expects a library, database, etc., to be at a certain location, and it's not, then a crash occurs.

The only way to really tell is trial and error.

Good luck, and keep us posted - I think your question illustrates the debate about online files backup vs. drive image backup. :major

OK I got both hard drives plugged in with the new drive in the first ribbon connection. However it is still calling my old drive the C drive and it booted up on the old drive. It calls my new drive the "F" drive.

Did you change the jumpers on the back panels of the drives? New one should be 'Master', old one should be 'Slave' - if that doesn't work, jumper them as 'Cable Select'.

The slave will wind up being the 'F' drive, if you've got two opticals as 'D' and 'E' - make sure there aren't any confusing USB drives plugged in while you're setting up the HDs.

Is Windows set up properly on the new drive?

Ok got all that straight, TY. Everything hooked up with new drive as "C" and old drive as "F". Not one program will work.
Is there some way I can get my old hard drive transferred over to the new drive in its entirety? Can a computer store do it? Is there some software I can get?

The hard drive manufacturer should have an application to 'clone' the contents of your old hard drive onto the new one. Check their website.
