Lately my PC seems to be a LOT slower starting up programs, especially OUTLOOK. Any tips or tweaks you could suggest? I frequently defrag with Diskeeper and run spybot, adaware, cleanup and other programs to keep things crisp and clean. Can't get a handle on this one. here's my specs and thanks for any suggestions in advance!! Bo Bo Bolinski

Right click *my computer* on your desktop, go to properties, click the advance tab and then Performance setting button. Once there, go to the Advance tab and ensure that under processor scheduling and memory usage *Programs* is checked. Next, do a Ctl+Alt+Del and go to task manager. Go to the Processor tab, How many are running? 20, 30, 40, 50? This is a whole tutorial in inself but here is where you should start. www.answersthatwork.com and click the task list button. There you will see an alphabetical list of almost all the known Processes that run under windows. What you want to do is *scrub* what is running in the backround. Read about each one carefully!! They will let you know if it is a virus, spyware, trojan or a critical windows component and what it's purpose is. I have personnally have taken computers that were running over 50 Processes down to just over 30 and freeded up megs and megs of memory by doing this. Once you have your scrub list go to start, run, and type msconfig and go to the start up tab and start enchecking one at a time with reboots inbetween each one to ensure that the system still operates normally. If you have not crashed your system by now your doing good. The last step is to go to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm read carefully!!!!!!!! he has some great tips for XP sp2. Please Back up everything before you go nuts on these processes and services for you are dealing with expert setting that could make or break XP. just be carefull and if you are not sure dont mess with it and do more research before you do something with it.

    good luck

dedub...looks like it was just OUTLOOK that was causing me grief. It took forever to open. I went to the online MS Office website and used their knowledge database to search "Outlook takes a long time to open" and found a solution by re-installing MSN..OUTLOOK opens instantly now!

Kinda restores my faith in MS Help...

Thanks, Bo Bo...I don't know if I will follow thru with your suggestions..yet! However, I still think there :p is room for improvement; namely, cleaning up all of the programs that start up on boot and are running in the background. Is that what your fix is aimed at?

    Thanks, Bo Bo Bolinski
