    Hi,
I have 2 pc's, this one which is working fine so can connect to the site and an older "Mesh" pc which has been upgraded to Win Xp Proffessional version 2002 service pack 3 (this done several months ago without problem) I run A.V.G. 7.5 anti virus software on it.
After my husband used the pc for the internet (via our wireless connection) we seem to have had problems.
Basically the pc starts, the AVG software downloads the updates but I cannot connect to the internet, help and support wont work, outlook express and other programs are also not working, when I try to open any this message
the message box on screen says

"Program has encountered a problem and needs to be closed,Please tell microsoft about this problem and you can send a report,"when I click on dont send the program just shuts down

I originaly posted in the Malware section and have gone through the process with help from the team only to find that this is not the case.
Anyone have any ideas what I can try next :cry

These 4 methods can repair and/or replace missing/damaged files. Running them all wont hurt:

    System Restore: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
    chkdsk: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us
    scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747/en-us
Windows Live OneCare Safty Scanner - free online: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

As a last resort this 5th method is a repair install but lets see if the above can't do it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Also reinstalling AVG could help? Or it could be a firewall issue? Finally Dial-a-fix has a lot of repair tools inside it. Not only on it's main page but also hidden behind the button with the hammer on it. Not compatible with IE8. http://majorgeeks.com/Dial-a-fix_Full_d4899.html

Consider removing AVG 7.5 and installing AVG 8.5. I have it running on several computers (one with XP SP3) and it works better than v 8.0 did.

    Thanks for the reply guy's,
Ist, I cannot connect to the internet on the (faulty) old pc, the program gives the sames "Internet Explorer encountered a probelm" message.
2nd, I cannot go into system restore as I cannot access the help and support program, same message as above.
3, I have run scandisk, no change.

I will go and uninstall AVG 7.5 as plodr suggests and let you know how this effects the pc.

I bought this pc in 1998, and I have wondered if there could be a hard drive problem,is there a way of finding this out?

Maybe its ready for the scrap heap, I am happy to keep trying as I enjoy sorting out the problem it helps me learn more, so as long as you have idea's I will keep trying.
    Many thanks for your input.

    Hi again
I have uninstalled AVG 7.5, with no differance.
I thought I would repair with the Win XP CD disk, but this will not run, I then entered set-up when pc was booting up and tried to start by CD only to get the message CD dissabled.
I can get into controll panel and from there system this shows that the CD is working correctly
I can open my photo's,word docments etc but cannot load a program, its very strange, I think this may be some thing that has give up the ghost ! any thoughts?

    Hi,

I cannot reinstall anything at the moment as previously explained.:cry

I think the only solution is to format and re-install Win XP, unless you have any other thoughts.I have looked in the system error logs and there is an ! mark saying that there was an illegal port problem, now my husband has told me that he connected the pc to the TV to see if it worked which it did, but I am now thinking that this has made the system unstable (any thoughts?)

Right, the pc was originally win 98 and I upgraded it to Win professional xp service pk 2,I have all the flopply disks and win 98 CD, do I have to re-install 98 then upgrade again to win xp? and do you know how and where I find the drivers on the pc to copy them?

At the moment when I put in the Win xp disk there is no joy and if I go into start-up and start from CD it says that a newer version is on the pc (I presume this referes to downloaded upgrades)

Sorry if this sounds "scatty" :confusedI would just like to get the pc working again.

If the computer is of a vintage that it came with Win 98, its probably not worth a lot of paid shop time.
I would remove the HD and connect it to another computer via USB and format the HD (after I saved all the docs/pics) then run check disk and if it passes reinstall xp.
I am guessing the computer is like a Intel P3 and the processor and ram are lacking.

Any IDE hard drive should be ok.

No, not any IDE drive will work. The BIOS is from 2000 which means it probably will not recognize any hd larger than 127GB.
