you can stop unwanted programs from starting as windows starts by doing the following:

click start, run and type in 'msconfig'
click on the startup tab & untick any unwanted programs.
you can do the same thing with the services tab (although unless you know what you are stopping from running id leave all windows services alone (there is a tick box to display only non-windows services)
after that reboot n see if thats helped

well the only way you are going to stop these things running is through msconfig or uninstalling programs blindly.
i dont know who told you not to use msconfig but its pretty easy to re-tick any buttons that you unticked if you have any problems.

It obviously IS caused by programs that startup when windows starts up & unless you want to delete these out of the registry, id suggest using msconfig.

anything such as printer centres, adobe speed launcher, etc etc once installed will start up as windows starts up & these are the programs yyou were talking about that hog your memory.

removing them will not affect functionality at all. they will start if you actually open them, rather than starting as windows starts and running in the background all the time

    Here ya go.

The reason why msconfig is not reccomended is because people forget about it, and when they uninstall applications, they have the disabled startup entries left over in their registry.

The reccomended method is to go into the individual programs and set them not to load with windows.

    You should know that jimmy.

MSCONFIG is a diagnostic tool. Hence the Diagnostic button. When you have finished diagnosing and cured the problem you should end up in normal mode. But as Adrynalyne says people are people.

Run MSCONFIG it doesn't matter what mode.
Make a list of items on your startup tab
Go to each program and see if you can find an option or setting to not start automatically when Windows start. All properly written programs have such a setting.
    Restart MSconfig in Normal mode.
    Restart you pc
    Run
    regedit

    navigate to
    HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
    and
    HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run

in the right hand pane there will be a list of software configured to start with windows.
Right click and delete obstinate ones.

You should end up with no more tha a handful, probably due to antivirus, Broadband modem and graphics/audio card controls.
You can also keep printer ones if you like.

    close regedit
    restart

@Adrynalyne, thanks for that link. :cool

I'm going to print this out and laminate (and bind) it, so I can take it with me when I visit friend's (trying to speed their PC's up). :major

    @WolfX28.
That is a standard occurrence in XP, and it is not recommended to try and delete these. Bazza

things that run in the background are often due to IE addins such as Google toolbar. It indexes your pc when it thinks you are 'not doing anyhting else.
    Microsoft inexing is the same.

you may also have antimalware chuntering away apres games.

When you download the Google toolbar there are several pages of 'options' that come with it. Options means you must opt out!

    Yahoo is not much better.

I recommend against toolbars as I see so many problems associated with them. You can remove them via the advanced options in the tools tab

Antimaware = antivirus. You don't get rid of it you find the least objectionable one.
