How does the 512 GB SSD stack up against the 1 TB HD?

It's half the capacity but many times faster!

    SSD against HDD

    Pros -
Faster, no need for defrag, quick boot up times.

    Cons - Quite Expensive.

SSD costs are not as high as they used to be, as in all things the longer they are around.. but if you're using it for storage of *important* stuff, have a HDD backup. SSDs can just die *without warning* where as you might hear a HDD going bad and have some time to react. But like a boot drive for a gaming system (unless you're mobo supports M2) they are the bees knees, fast, quiet.

I can and do get similar items/ similar prices just going in the big box stores on lunch break and walking out with it. Done in 15 minutes. Can return right there if any problems.
Should be the same in other areas.

Some big box stores like Bestbuy or walmart...Most Walmart's don't carry this type of stuff. You would have to shop online. And Best buy well i think they are going out of business if not all ready. There are not too many places any more that can carry these kinda items.

Walmart's here have these, Big Box office stores have them, heck, here, GoodWill have them. Last time I tried to buy a Windows OS, the operator at a computer shop here told me best bet was Target. I guess in each area you just have to check.

It's cheaper in the US than UK. Prices here for SSD's are really expensive SAMSUNG EVO 860 2.5" Internal SSD - 500 GB priced at £74.99 which is about $99 dollars in your money.

Thumb Drives (Flash Drives) and SSDs are not the same.

In a nutshell, SSDs are based on Flash Drive technology. But there's a lot more to it than that. Flash Drives cannot replace an Internal SSD or HDD. And you're correct regarding the storage - externally.

    FWIW...
I have Ubuntu on a Flash Drive.

    And Welcome to MajorGeeks. :)

"Flash Drives cannot replace an Internal SSD or HDD"

That line is getting thinner and thinner everyday now.
I have this Win '7 duplicated on a usb flash drive now by using 'WintoUSB'. I can crank this or other pc's from that usb. The better the usb drive and the better the port so goes the running of the Win '7. The MS 'win to go' feature in '8 and '10 are allowing for this now also.

I was surprised the other night I was going thru some thumb drives on a broken pc to try to get it running so a child could play a few games when all of a sudden I saw 'my' desktop. I had inserted the drive I had made of my pc. It cranked and ran well enough to read some other thumb drives and play the games and even follow short-cuts to the other thumb drive that I put on the desktop.

    Good one to try out!

Running Windows 7 on a USB thumb drive can be a better alternative.Windows 7 does not need much to run in the backround.

This is my current list of processes running compare that to windows 10.
