my buddy has an old computer he just put 256mb of ram in (doubling his current) but he now need a new prossesor (its an old hp) the motherboard is DFI CA64-BN/LN from what he told me, please recommend a prossesor on newegg, under 100$ is good, it doesnt need to be strong

Most likely, due to OEM motherboards are only made for a particular Processor speed and type, it would be better for him to just get a new computer. Do you know the model of the HP computer that your friend has?

How old is this HP, and what type of processor is in it now, Celeron, Pentium III.

Would he happen to have the documentation that came with the motherboard? It should tell you all the different processors it can support. I also agree with the abonve poster. I would just buy a new computer.

HP does not package any doc's with the computers anymore that would tell you what Processor's, but you can get the info off of their website.

Its wonderful that you are all ready to ditch out this computer for a new one, well many people can't afford a new rig. I have a lot of experience with HPs and upgrades on processors.

If it is a green celeron or Pentium, you can go up to 1ghz, on most mobo's, If it is a black chip celeron, you are SOL.

If it's a slot, I think you can go to 1Ghz as well, but I havn't tested that.

It's amazing when a simple Google search will reveal :p

It appears that the DFI CA64-BN (minus the /LN) is perhaps the non-proprietary version of the HP motherboard (usually the same board). It uses a socket 370 (Pentium III) but these aren't available on Newegg. Maybe on eBay, but I'll let you check the eBay prices and determine whether you should ditch the PC or not.

    Good luck :)

instead of newegg if you want to get a good deal on a PIII go to pricewatch.com better deals then newegg. shipping is a little slower but I got and 80gb hd for 40.00 including shipping.

Directron.com has some 370 P3's for sale. I recently upgraded my P3 733 to a 933. They still have some, but the P3 seems to be an endangered critter . . . if you have an older PC I'd recommend the FC-PGA as opposed to the FC-PGA2 models . . . bios updates for certain P3 boards are required for a processor upgrade (my intel D815EEA needed it . . . )

Hp's have a really easy bios upgrade that works well. 933 shouldn't be a problem for any green chip system.

bios's are available on hp's website, going waaaaaaay back, even really old hp's are there.
