The helpful geek in software support says I have no protection hardware. What do I need?

Ps I am trying to uninstall microsoft office trial and it will not uninstall. Is this an issue you can help with?

    Thanks for any help. Dixie

Also, when I try to update I get this error:

The following updates were not installed
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

What he was telling you is, you have no security software installed. Such as an anti-virus application and anti-spyware application. But he was also pointing out that you do not have enough ram(random access memory) which is hardware, to run XP sp3. You only have 512MB(MegaBytes) of ram installed and you should have at least 1GB(GigaByte) installed. So you need to add at least another 512MB. Adding the ram needs to be done before you can install the needed security software.

Your computer uses: PC-3200, 184 pin, DDR SDRAM type ram. You can go to Crucial.com and use the "Crucial System Scanner tool" to find recommendations for ram for your computer.

For your uninstalling of "microsoft office trial" problem and your update problems you should probably start a new thread in the Software forum, giving as much detail as you can about the problem. And be prepared to answer some questions as folks try to help you.

You need to get that ram upgraded though as XP is really struggling to run on your machine at the moment.

Excuse me, but XP will run on 512MB of RAM. Just does better with more.
I have an older (12 year old) IBM with less than 400MB of PC133 RAM running XP Home SP3. Slow as molasses in winter on startup and when changing web pages, but still works.
1GB is just the preferred minimum.

Thanks for the reply. I do have Avast anti-virus and super anti-spiware. Aren't they a protection?
Also, I have a hard drive can I move my printMaster to there? it uses 1,700.00 mb. Would that help?

    Hi

Really depends on what protection software you want, your posts are a little confusing as those are different areas

    Hardware Protetction can be:
A router to protect you from some internet nasties, to as you have a portable external HDD that can be used to protect your inportant data files etc

*I did notice that Chaslang in Malware forum did mention that you are low on RAM so you may wish to double it as he suggested and was suggested above.

    Software Protection can be:
Antivirus, which you have in Avast and Superantispyware, both are very good.

A little clarification on what you wish to achieve will help us help you :)

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

As for the software stuff, I can move this thread to software forum if what you are needing software help over hardware, that we can do when we know your issues fully.

But to uninstall office trial (what trial version is it BTW) if you goto Add/Remove is it listed and will it not uninstall from their? if not do you get any error messages and if so what?

You could try Revo uninstaller or the Windows Installer Cleanup tool and with both just remove the Office application.

For the .Net then instal them from the direct links, download to your PC and then run the installer for this one

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

Then try Windows update again after you have rebooted.

If you have a slowish PC then try the steps HERE

    Halo,

thanks for the info. Loved the Rev uninstaller. It did the trick. I could not remove it with Add/Remove in windows. I will move to the hardware forum now. I know I am all over the board. Don't have the single track mind that I need to hone in on one problem at a time. Bless you and your work. Dixie
