    Hallo

I have heard that using a proxy slows video streaming. The articles I have read all refer to this while using sites like youtube etc. Does it also apply to to applications like Skype? and does it make any difference whether you use a free or paid proxy?
This doesn't really make sense to me as a dial up ISP I used to use, gave me a proxy number to use after I complained about my connection being unusually slow?

    Hi

Think its a case of variables as some proxys could be slow but some quicker, youtube does have a 3rd party dedicated one here that may actually have the video already buffered up so would stream quickly.

Dont think free vs paid would be much different, again it would be on the quality of service and bandwidth they have to offer, so you could pay for one and its no different for you than not using a proxy service, to a free one thats good.

As for Skype, it may not make a difference as a proxy is a way to quickly open a page of data for you as someone else may have opened it, thus its cached up already, which is what proxies are used for as well as the anonymous side of them, but as a personal Skype call will be unique I would imagine its not going to be different, could be a bit slower as its going via a different route to you not using a proxy.

    Hi

Dont know about clarification, more a misty visional post but its what I would imagine is about right about proxies, but glad its going some way to answering your questions.

Do you need to use one with your ISP still? if so I can imagine the ISPs proxy is very good, I do remember using them with DUN in the past and they work great for general webpages etc but with new data as in Skype they wouldnt be a bonus but maybe no different to your general speed.

If you can test with and without a proxy to see if you can noticed with eye any difference in speed when using general internet, youtube or streaming media to Skype.

    Hi

Your reply did make things clearer, thanks, ie about youtube etc buffering. I don't need a proxy as I have a satellite connection now with the hub in US.

The contradictions I came across just made me curious!

    Hi

Ah gotcha on the contradictions, yeah computing can be confusing at times as many have opposing views, like the do you leave your PC on or turn off one... thats raged for years.

    Glad it helped :)
