What're the pros and cons for each? Unique capabilities?

I'd like to get away from the Wii & back to serious games (& EA's hockey series). I'd also like something that could record TV and connect to my pc (HP TouchSmart with bluetooth/wireless capabilities).

I'd like to hear what everyone thinks.

I'm on my fourth 360, all of them have died from the Red Ring Of Death. The first release-wave PS3 we bought back then is still running, cooler and more quiet than the 360, and has been used a lot more as well.

From a pure hardware quality standpoint, the PS3 is vastly superior.

In my opinion, the PS3 is way better than the 360!

The two systems are pretty evenly matched in power. I've noticed that one of them will act more superior (graphics-wise) depending on what game you're playing. Loading times also fluctuate on both. However, the PS3 runs incredibly quiet, quieter than my PC. I've played it for hours and it's not an overheated noisy mess like my friend's 360 is.

PS3's controller blows Xbox's out of the water. Another cool thing about the PS3 SixAxis controller is that it has motion sensor capabilities (yep! just like the Wii!). I've found the Xbox controller to be annoying and clunky. Some buttons are harder to reach and the controllers run out of life pretty fast.

You don't have to pay to join PS3's online network, granted Sony's still working out kinks since it's pretty new. Another plus is that with the PS3, you get a Blu-Ray player. The Xbox can only play DVDs and from what I've heard it doesn't offer 1080p HD resolution.

I'm not entirely sure if you can record TV with either system. But I do know it's possible to hook either one up to your PC (I have friends who have done it). So unless you'd be really upset by not being able to play Halo, I'd go with the PS3. It has a pretty sick game lineup, full of exclusives. Also, Mimsy mentioned the Red Ring of Death. It's a pretty serious problem on the Xbox console. I've yet to hear of such an issue on a major platform of Sony's.

    Hope I helped! :)

    You can't. :(

Other things I forgot to mention:

For multiplayer, XboxLive is vastly superior to PSN... so if you want to be able to play with your friends online a lot, factor that in.

The PS3 comes with a built-in wireless adapter and a standard 2.5-inch HDD. The 360 requires you to buy proprietary upgrades for either one.

PS3 also works as a blue-ray player... the 360's HD-DVD lost the format war.

I don't know if the slim will be backwards compatible so it can play PS2 games or not. My PS3 is backwards compatible back to where it can play PS1 games, even. :)

haha thats good. Go ps3, you wont go back. Also, ps3 is getting ready to make a big relase on games. They were in the back of the games dept. for a bit, but they are coming in strong now. TONS of great titles coming out.:drool

With regards to TV, I know the XBox can record to my PC's hard drive. It can also access & display media (music, pics, vids). Now, I know PS3 has PlayTV in Europe. Is that slated to ever come here (or something like it)? Can the PS3 connect to my computer's media files?

Yeah you can access your computers media files thru the ps3. My brother plays divx files straight from the external hdd which is connetd to his pc. Ps3 rulz

have you heard of tversity? http://tversity.com/
I don't have a ps3 or have ever used this, but it's supposed to work fine.

also, cant you stream your media library through windows media player, and the ps3 can access it?

yeah you can stream your media files with windows media player or the windows media centre thing.
Tversity is very sluggish. It is a good program just really slow to load.

And if you care about that sort of thing, the PS3 can do true 1080p. The 360 can't. You need to buy the HDMI cable separate though, the PS3 ships with a regular VGA.... I got my HDMI cable for $10 at Walmart.

Also, ps3 decodes surround sound formats if your receiver cant decode them. Not sure if xbox does that, but its a plus for ps3.

I think no matter what they do to a console, it'll still suck if the games arent up to scratch. I personally prefer my 360 to my PS3, neither of whioch I use to play on line, I just like the games more on 360.

I prefer my PS3 for the exact same reason, I like those games better. :)

But you are absolutely right. When all is said and done, you buy a console for the games it can play, not for any of the extra features.

    Hello..
I am using XBox 360 and I like XBox 360 games very much. They are really interesting and fun to play those games. According to me XBox 360 is the best in all of games. It has all wonderful games. I do not prefer PS3.

Newer xbox 360's have hdmi ports in the back. If you plug it into your tv you can get 1080p, only if your tv supports it.

its pretty much the same, My brother in law has a PS3 and I got a 360.

ps3 has certain things that come automatically but you basically just pay for it upfront rather than separately like wireless.

newer 360s dont have the same problems, my original one broke after a couple years, the one I have now runs cooler and is quiet. They are equally powerful, 360 has more powerful GPU while the ps3s cell engine is more powerful so it even out in total performance.

the only difference is exclusive games, which imo are overrated. I have the 360 but I dont like halo very much, I think multi-platform games are better like COD!

Spanky while I agree with almost everything you said, I had to highlight the above, not sure where you got your info from but that statement is laughable at best. The Xbox , while a great gaming system (btw I have both) is not capable of running many games the ps3 is, MGS4, GT5 to name just 2. Crytec released a statement a while back giving the reason for not releasing Crysis on consols simply saying the Xbox is not capable of running it.

    http://www.ps3focus.com/archives/40

Those are the system specs compared.

Personally I would take a PS3 over and xbox any day, but I admit I'm a fanboy of the PS. Not to mention my xbox is dead after about 100th the play time of my (still perfectly running 2 years later) PS3.
Not only that but the PS3 is simply a better system, less problems, more hardware for your money and much more efficient.

Another note is the stats for Xbox failure are at an alarming 54.2% failure rate.
Thats 1 in 2 (Half) Xbox's crap out, fanboy or not, that paints a very clear picture IMO.

Read this, for a website that I find to be Xbox fanboys, this article must have hit a nerve.

PS3 rules the game land, (Actually I think Nintendo will be the last man standing when the dust clears, but it doesn't cater for serious gamers very well)

Which is one of the biggest problems. Sony did it right the first time, Microsoft needed three or four attempts before they were able to manufacture one that was designed with adequate cooling and semi-reliable components.

Yes, the 360 is great, when it works. Which they keep doing so often that for the price tag they come with, the failure rate they've had is just unacceptable.

yea, I was just saying for someone buying one now need not worry.

the OP wanted the pros and cons because he wanted to know which to get, what happened then is a bit irrelevant to someone buying one now

  21. Mimsy

I disagree. The way the two companies approached product launch is indicative of where their priorities are and what their mindset is.

One of them knowingly pushed a half-finished product to launch, without giving any consideration to the long-term consequences of the high failure rates that would lead to. The other waited a year longer to ensure the finished product was up to promised standards. To me, the difference between the two is far from irrelevant.

  22. murderhigh187

    murderhigh187 Private First Class

but Sony did that with the ps2, while xbox waited longer and had a lot less problems. So how far do you look back?

I wouldnt trust any company is really looking out for my best interest

  23. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

As far as necessary, obviously. Sony learned from their mistake. Microsoft imitated a mistake. ;)

  24. murderhigh187

well that 'mistake' has sold twice as many units than the ps3, xbox, and xbox360 combined. Microsoft wanted some of that action and the 360 is outselling the PS3.

from a business perspective I cant really say Sony learned anything

the original xbox was pretty fail imo, I bought a 3rd ps2 (silver slim one) like a year ago because of all my old games. Last gens ps2 = current gens 360.

EDIT: we kinda high jacked this thread

In its defense, once you get it thoroughly modded, the original Xbox kicks ***. ;)

I bought a black slim PS2 in '06 because the original one was too big to fit on the shelf on the entertainment center, and still play a lot of my PS2 games on it. That way my husband can play his PS3 games on the bigger beefier PS3 without me nagging him for screen time. LOL

    EDIT:
Yeah, we did. Apologies for that, everyone.

The PS3 has great capabilities, like the free online gaming.
But, the Xbox360 has (I Think) better capabilities, it's just that you need to pay for the Xbox LIVE Service.
Plus, better controls/more good games (besides Infamous & Killzone 2)

I had a PS3 previously but got bored with it and ended up selling it

My Blu-Ray player just broke so figured I might as well buy a PS3 instead of buying a new Blu-Ray because the cost isn't that much more

Huh, got both a xbox 360 that outputs to 1080p, and PS3 outputs to 1080p. So, which one is better? Both are okay, except for the bluray output. I haven't touched my xbox 360 in about 1.5 years....The ps3? Well, only for movies. Though, one thing I did do, is to turn OFF the built in encoder of the PS3.

Now, my display on my receiver shows that I'm running whatever encoding my bd-disc is running.

Yes, I'm running HDMI all the way through to the receiver, then to the TV.
