As we all know, the newer mobos have a 24pin power connector where the PSU is plugged in; the older mobos and PSUs have 20pin connectors and plugs. Can I safely use an older 20pin PSU on a newer 24pin mobo if it's strong enough, without damaging the main board? I have a new mobo, and an older higher end PSU.... in a bit of hurry here.... Thanks! ;)

AFAIK, this may depend on your specific motherboard. Do you have any documentation on it? If not, try finding some on the manufacturer's website.

    What motherboard do you have?

The new mobo is a GigaByte S-Series model GA-945GCM-S2C....
    Thanks.

BTW- I'm in no hurry anymore, I've got all weekend to build this thing. Just trying to save a friend some money on a new PSU if his old one will work...

Upon some further research, I learned that the MB was shipped with the 'extra' 4 pins on the power connector blocked off with a little plastic thingy. The PC's owner removed it. Furthermore, I learned that (obviously) a 20pin power connector will work just fine as long as it has 400w minimum; this one is 550w. So, the "problem" (if you can call it a problem) has been solved, questions answered, and now we're all out of control with blissful joy.

Glad you got it figured out. They also make adapters for them also.
