PSU on/off switch "starting" boot-up when switched on!!??

After piecing together some "older" spare components, the first boot-up of Win98 was ok. Had a problem with the cd-rom opening up (want to reformat & install WinXP Pro) so I shut down and installed a different cd-rom. When I switched the power on at the PSU, the system starts to power up "without" pressing the power button on the front of the case! However, some components are running, lights on the front of the case are on, but it never "beeps" and the screen is black.

Can the PSU switch be bad and did this "fry" anything???

 

If your not getting any beeps try and pull the memory and reseat it. It is likely you could have knocked something loose when installing the CD-rom drive. Check all of your connectors, IDE, power, etc..., to make sure they are secure. Post back after trying this.

 

I used a "new" power cord to the PSU and re-seated the RAM, as suggested, and the same problem happened with the power switch on the PSU (system starts to boot up)... BUT... the computer booted up and the monitor came on like normal! I can now shut down & start up normally, it seems, without any problems so far!

Still not sure if this is normal for "this" system to boot up this way and/or if the PSU is on the way out. So far, it doesn't appear to have damaged anything either.
